I am playing this song in the key of D major with a simple steady rhythm:
Strumming pattern:
1 2 3 4 1 2 3 4
D D Du D D Du D D
Most emphasis is on 4 steady downstrokes to the bar. Light ‘between beat’ upstrokes add to the rhythmic feel of the song. These can be varied to your taste.

The difficulty comes in the breathing, especially when you get to the 12th day – a bit practice is required. I have used GarageBand to add bass and strings as the song proceeds.

For a version of the song in C major:

For an old parody version with Northumberland lyrics:

  1. Hi Bob,
Beautiful performance of Christmas carol. Very much lovely singing.

  2. Made me curious so I went to Wikipedia for some background on this lovely simple tune. Thanks for sharing Mr. Tulip! "The song, published in England in 1780 without music as a chant or rhyme, is thought to be French in origin. "The Twelve Days of Christmas" has a Roud Folk Song Index number of 68. The tunes of collected versions vary. The standard tune now associated with it is derived from a 1909 arrangement of a traditional folk melody by English composer Frederic Austin, who first introduced the familiar prolongation of the verse "five gold rings" (now often "five golden rings""

  3. Never heard these Christmas songs – probably because I haven´t listened to english carols at all— but they all sound very nice. I´m thinking it might be the right time to start learning them 🙂 Thank you for these videos.
