In the video #135 – Best Classic SNL Cast Member with Dave Thomas, Bob and Doug McKenzie are a pair of fictional Canadian siblings who hosted “Great White North”, a ad lib skit which was featured on SCTV – second city television for the show’s most popular season when it braodcast by the Canadian Broadcasting Channel in the 80’s. Bob’s character is performed by actor Rick Moranis and Doug’s character is brought to life by Dave Thomas. The sketch was brought to life originally as fluff to both please and mock annoying Canadian content laws, the siblings turned into a pop culture phenomenon in both Canada and the USA. The McKenzie siblings went on to become the focus of a bestselling comedy album, The Great White North, in 1981.
On October 11, 1975 television sketch comedy experienced a seismic shift as NBC’s Saturday Night made its premiere.
