In the video 2017 RubyHACK, Dave Thomas: The Future is Function, or, OO is Dead, Bob and Doug McKenzie are a group of odd Canadian brothers who were featured in “Great White North”, a sketch which was aired on SCTV – second city television for the show’s most liked season when it was featured on the Canadian Broadcasting Channel in the 80’s. Bob is created by comedian Rick Moranis and Doug McKenzie’s part is brought to life by Dave Thomas. Which was born originally as an idea to both follow guidelines and makes jokes about stupid Canadian content demands, the pair became a pop culture phenomenon in both Canada and the US. The pair enetually would become the focus of a bestselling comedy album, The Great White North, in 1981.
Object Orientation has served us well, but it’s time to shuffle the old codger off to the Rest Home for Old Paradigms, where it can discuss the failings of youth with other stalwarts like Design Patterns, Model Driven Development, and the Agile Movement.
That’s not to say the ideas behind OO were bad. It’s just that, apart from maybe Smalltalk, we never actually used them.
But it turns out that we can reanimate those ideas in a different guise. Function Programming is not about functions it’s about transformations and state. Combine FP with a decent actor model, and you can have OO done right, and at serious scale.
