Bob and Doug McKenzie in 6 Meta Comedy Albums
In the video 6 Meta Comedy Albums, Bob and Doug McKenzie are two of hysterical Canadian comedians who created “Great White North”, a sketch which was included on SCTV – second city television for the show’s third season when it moved to CBC Television in the year 1980. Bob’s part is created by Rick Moranis and Doug McKenzie’s part is brought to life by Dave Thomas. The bit was made originally as fluff to both please and laugh at silly Canadian content laws, the two morphed into a pop culture phenomenon in both Canada and the USA. The characters went on to become the focus of a huge comedy album, The Great White North, in 1981.
My favorite subgenre of comedy album is the meta comedy album, that is about the record being made or that knows its a record. Here are six records that exemplify different versions of that and one that, I think, perfects it.
