holy click-bait... T_T I was hoping he was talking about a new evolution of agile or something to take its place.
Did he say anything at all that was relevant? Anything. 25% in i heard nothing that was worth my time. I.O.W. crappy speech.
He is making a lot of mistakes here, because his assumptions are all wrong:
"When I write code, I write clean code, that follows major patterns and principles, so enforcing the need through test is lost".
Sure, and when a colleague or team-mate wants to extend your code, how much up shit creek is he?
He can't validate if your implementation are intentionally done they way there are, in terms of business requirements, or how you felt that day.
Tests are for more than your own sake.
Agile is an industry. Just like the waterfall model was. Which was a huge mistake, and I won't claim that agile isn't one either.
But agile is better than waterfall. Objectively. Don't like agile? Come up with a better alternative than agile.
That you simply lost track of a KPI (that still exists within agile, just not as a part of the developers planning directly) isn't really agiles fault, that is a manager fault.
Your time still needs to check in at 0800. They still check out at 16:00
You need to be able to bill their salary, to a client. Regardless of how they organize their day. The manager simply has to correlate "meat balls -> to hours" on his own time, instead of having a developer micromanage his own time-sheet directly.
A bunch of incorrectly assumptions, leads to a bunch of failed conclusions. I can totally believe he doesn't test, because if he did, he would have figured this out, before he made a talk out of it.
I loved the reference to "Are we doing it right" 16:11. I heard this in a standup a while back and knew immediately that the team had lost it's way. The answer to that question should be, "Are you getting the result you want?". If not then all the "Doing it right" will not result in any value being delivered. The team was doing a lot right, and getting very little done.
