Rick Moranis isn’t the only amazing thing to come out of Canada although admittedly it feels it. Singer/songwriter Alexz Johnson just dropped her new EP entitled Heart, and it packs a lot of it. Earlier this month, she filmed an A-Sides session (asidesmusic.com) at the Music Conservatory of Westchester and crushed two songs off her EP and chatted about it.
Transcript:
so I just played American dreamer and
this is heartache
and they’re two songs off my new hearty
p and um
I played them here acoustically in this
nice reverby room
um the songs I American dreamer I’m from
Canada and I should be looking at you
not the camera yeah I mean whatever it’s
totally fine awesome
um
no this was this is just an infomercial
so go ahead American dreamer is I’m from
Canada and I moved to New York City
to pursue music and follow this crazy
dream of touring I wanted to just tour I
didn’t you know have this like
idea of being a big star I just wanted
to go on tour and play and um American
dream was just about kind of following
your dream regardless of walls you know
just breaking through and doing it and
this is heartache is about heartache
really
um
pain of love
so is it okay even though you’re from
Canada to do the American dream like in
Canada is there the American dream is a
saying
so it’s not like the Canadian dream and
people have been saying that’s just to
play hockey probably
yeah yeah it’s the Canadian dream yeah
that’s true no I love the connects um
it’s yeah I just it just came yeah it is
actually it’s kind of like a a line that
everybody says I think universally what
is the American dream really
um it can be a different thing for
anybody and I think it could be as much
as just having a little piece of land
and a picket fence and a family it can
be you know whatever it is for people
it’s different and I thought it was kind
of a nice Universal way of saying that
um everybody has one
so at what point do you decide to just
put out the EP as opposed to like I know
you’re working on a full length right
now but like at what point do you are
you like I’m just gonna put out like
five or six tracks yeah
I’m just isn’t done
um I got I funded the album through
pledge
you got a lot of money through a pledge
a lot of money yeah like if I did it it
would be tough to get like sixty dollars
like sixty dollars I wouldn’t even
seriously no it’s yeah I didn’t it’s a
really it’s like the new way I’m gonna
have I’m gonna have a campaign to ask
better questions I’m sorry no it’s okay
it’s good um it’s good I have to watch
what I say sometimes I feel
um it’s a great platform for me because
I didn’t know it’s a really hard thing
to ask people
for money I think that’s as well it’s a
universal thing to be like um hey you
know I want to play music can you lend
me some cash it’s really humbling but
the cool thing about it is like you know
it’s kind of like playing a live show
there’s an exchange that I think is
really vulnerable and important and cool
and I’m not you know I feel like this
whole bling factor in the music industry
you know is kind of putting off this
idea that’s kind of unattainable for a
lot of people and I feel like it’s kind
of a good message to kind of make it
like a community thing and it’s working
it’s worked really well for me but with
the EP specifically I just the album’s
not finished yet and
I feel there’s the responsibility you
know when people are backing your
projects it’s stressful like I’m I’m on
Twitter I’m on I’m very connected with
my fan base and it’s like where is the
music it’s been over a year and there’s
no science to making a record I’m
working with David Khan at Avatar and
he’s a genius but like everything you
know it takes time and
um being able to work with someone so
awesome on this record it’s made me just
take my time and make sure it’s the
record I want so yeah I put out an EP
kind of like an album sampler
just as a thank you and hang on and I
believe that these songs are finished
now so I’ll just put them out you know
and why not it’s ready put it out that’s
what I feel
so and uh so does that mean the full
length is going to have all original
yeah it is yeah I’m
I’m bidding on whether
they’re Muriel right
um or it might just be a smaller album I
I’m still figuring that out but I just
they’re really special songs to me
they’ve actually gotten a lot of
interest from majors at this point and
me and management were just trying to
assess the best
most authentic way for me at this stage
in my career to get this out there
you know because I’ve been signed twice
in the past big deals and everything can
look really good on paper but people are
afraid of things that are different and
it’s kind of nice with pledge having it
being able to just steer my own so
I I don’t know but I know it’s
definitely going to be done this year
and how many songs I’m not sure yet cool
yeah what’s the running time going to be
a beach I’m just kidding
I actually I don’t want to Dive Right
you know
39 minutes total
39 what’s track six I’m just kidding
seriously so um so you just off a
European tour right and now you’re going
back in the studio and you’re back right
yeah and it’s like a funky place I think
for you because on one hand you just
released the pavement on the other you
have to rush not rush but you have to
like actually make the album before
European tour where I played it acoustic
right every night on stage played
Shepherd’s Bush Empire which was amazing
um but yeah it is it’s funny it’s a
funny top like yeah totally so it’s
constant back and forth for you it’s
going to happen like that for sure on
the road in the studio in the studio and
now I’m just basically planning another
headlining tour around the record
release when that’s done the album
should be finished in like a month okay
and then from there I’ll just assess
what cool what’s next I want to point
out that up until like a few minutes ago
I didn’t hear any of your Canadian
accent come through there was just one
little subtle what did I say I don’t
even remember but it I just picked up
was it a book no I don’t think it was
you I don’t know did you like throw an a
out there or something no maybe it did
yeah it’s just it was just something
very subtle you gotta keep it there no
and seriously I’m proud to be a Canadian
you should be because they do everything
right and we tend to do things wrong
see we can cross check properly you know
what I mean yeah I’m thinking more
College antibiotics but that
yeah I mean seriously I saw sicko you
know a couple years ago with Michael
what’s his name damn it forgot his name
really we’re talking about the movie
yeah or psycho no sicko yeah which is
all about the Health Care system and I’m
like that’s right it’s like they showed
France
but they also there was a section on
Canada and I’m like I am living in the
wrong Country Canada is totally doing it
right and and it is the home of Rick
Morana so I just wanna
make that clear yes like I would hope
that when I’m like crossing the border
like every time because I do this all
the time because I sell drugs apparently
no
um no when I cross the border like I
would love to see like welcome to Canada
and just a big picture of Dark Helmet
but instead it’s just a big off
Beaver yeah yes
it’s so disappointing I know I mean
seriously Rickman this is probably the
best importance
where is he I don’t know oh that’s funny
I’m totally you’re gonna google that too
I should read a song about Rick Moran
can you seriously can I get like a just
give me a tiny credit okay just just you
know I can do that or just in the liner
notes just be like weird guy locked his
key in the door in this room which is
true that should be captured on video
because I walked into this room that
we’re in yeah and my key as we’re
talking right now all my keys like my
house keys everything they’re stuck in
the store I don’t know if you get them
back I hope so too because if not
there’s nowhere to upload this true yeah
yeah
like seriously you have to finish your
album in this room I do I have to write
a song about Rick Moranis and your keys
and it has to be
a song about that you have to make it
work too because you don’t want it to
feel forced that’s true should we try
now no
um
so um so I would assume you’re going
back on tour at some point I am that’s
what I want I love to work that’s what I
want to do I just gotta get down and
finish and I have to find the right you
know I love Yeah that’s the plan I’m
gonna do that cool either I’m headlining
on a tour across the states in Canada
um or I’m gonna open for something if
that comes up around the EP until the
album’s done but
I love I think it’s the most important
thing is playing that
not only does it make you better it’s
the craziest thing when you play live
you could play in your bedroom every day
for years but there’s something about
being on stage acoustic that’s like acne
well yeah I need to get good you know
what I mean that’s great and then on the
flip side from an audience perspective
it’s like one of the last thing I mean
look you’re gonna always have an
in the audience looking at their phone
the whole timing and all that but
it’s one of that just echoed but
I like how they turn but okay I’m done
um
it’s still one of the only times that
you can actually share something with
somebody like a common you know you
could you could say in a movie theater
it’s the same kind of thing but then you
have who are texting there I’m
just saying I find that more people who
go to shows yeah they’re videotaping and
blah blah blah
kind of live in the moment a little bit
better oh yeah oh yeah so there’s still
that yeah so and you can only get that
nice vulnerability and
you know it’s nice to see someone with
an instrument
I kind of find it interesting that as
artists get bigger you know they start
losing everything just play with like a
tutu yeah a tutu
I’m into weird music
um but you know what I mean like losers
I don’t know anyway whatever yeah it’s
all relative I like it actually I
appreciate that you’re making real music
it can actually feel like you know yeah
you can clearly see the connection it’s
gonna work for me in my career I’m being
totally honest with you what being true
to yourself it’s it’s a difficult it’s a
funny thing yeah I know a lot of really
talented people in New York City who
just they can’t not do it the authentic
way they can’t you know what I mean like
they can’t just put on some kind of like
I’m gonna write a song about
blank
um you know what I mean like I feel like
there is ways to in my career up to this
point like I’ve been I mean I know the
moments that I’ve closed doors being
like I can’t
make it that way I can’t do that because
it’s just not going to be authentic I’m
going to be miserable so I’d rather just
play music that
and people that like it you know look at
Amy Mann she’s so awesome the fan base
is so solid and it’s like she tours and
she has a life doing music and it’s like
that would be a dream come true if I
could do that so
thank you for saying that no problem no
that’s all good long time about this
meanwhile on the other side I’m trying
to sell out anytime I can get right but
I’m just I’m just kidding not really
um okay well thanks good luck with
everything thank you for taking the time
I hope you’ll come back
probably not actually yeah well you’ll
never leave because the door’s locked so
so thanks
yeah it’s gonna be a rough 80 days but
someone will find us awesome all right
thanks thank you
