Bob and Doug McKenzie in Barry McGuire – Eve Of Destruction (1965)
In the video Barry McGuire – Eve Of Destruction (1965), Bob and Doug McKenzie are a pair of strange Canadian siblings who created “Great White North”, a show which was included on SCTV – second city television for the show’s most popular season when it was broadcast on CBC Television in the 1980s. Bob McKenzie is created by comedian Rick Moranis and Doug McKenzie is performed by actor Dave Thomas. Regardless the fact it was created originally as fluff to both please and laugh at stupid Canadian content policies, the characters transformed into a pop culture phenomenon in both Canada and the United States. The brothers enetually would become the focus of a famous comedy album, The Great White North, in 1981.
“Eve of Destruction” is a protest song written by P. F. Sloan in mid-1964.[ Several artists have recorded it, but the best-known recording was by Barry McGuire. This recording was made between July 12 and July 15, 1965 and released by Dunhill Records. The accompanying musicians were top-tier LA session players: P. F. Sloan on guitar, Hal Blaine (of Phil Spector’s “Wrecking Crew”) on drums, and Larry Knechtel on bass. The vocal track was thrown on as a rough mix and was not intended to be the final version, but a copy of the recording “leaked” out to a DJ, who began playing it. The song was an instant hit and as a result the more polished vocal track that was at first envisioned was never recorded.

Barry McGuire: 'I want to be surrounded by mime artists in a scrap yard, whilst wearing horse riding gear'
Director: Eh?
Barry McGuire: Get it done!
Who’s here thinking of ww3 with China and Russia? Or even the apocalypse? It’s coming..
He sings like the cookie monster
"Eat your next-door neighbor but don't forget to say grace."
Question – How long is the "Eve of Destruction"? Just asking for a friend…..
My husband cousin.
I love the line about going to space but coming back to same old place.
Classic Vietnam War era song.
It has been played in many documentaries, movies, and TV shows about the war.
XXXXXX XX A BARRY .POET.X. = + + + = COUNTY CORK .AARON …EIRE. GOD,S HOLY EMERALD OF THE GREEN SAINT STEVANS ISLES. UNITED. ….RED&WHITE….UNITED. BEAUT.WONDEROUS. SUE. X. ANAN. …-A BARRY …WXYZ.. A MWNN HYMM . A .AMAZING GRACE,
HERE WE ARE AGAIN!!
MAYBE SOME NAMES HAVE CHANGED BECAUSE MANKIND HAS BROUGHT US BACK TO ANOTHER "EVE OF DESTRUCTION". WHEN WILL WE EVER LEARN??? THE GOD OF HEAVEN WIĹL ALLOW MAN TO END THIS CHAOS BECAUSE WE'RE NOT CAPABLE OF GOODNESS AND PEACE. WE DESERVE WHAT IS COMING.
I just updated the lyrics to this wonderful tune again for 2024 (sorry, couldn't resist)
That was nineteen sixty five now it’s twenty twenty four
Computers were invented and they hide in every store
The Internet was born, and everyone connected
But no-one heard how, China got infected
All the nations leaders just wanted it deflected
So they kept their jobs and their mates got re-elected
Lost your job boy, it’s for your own good boy . . .
(CHORUS)
Now there’s fortunes being made by those with corporate greed
The world is getting hungrier while they control the feed
The rich keep getting richer driven by ambition
Building war machines with tons of ammunition
Climate keeps a changin’ but they have no real solution
Cos the atmosphere is bigger than any politician
And speeches alone can’t bring restitution
As a western world’s capital just witnessed a sedition
(CHORUS)
Alpha Delta Gamma Beta Omicron
Did anyone know what the hell was going on
Pharmaceuticals held the world to ransom
With prices on vaccines that bordered on extortion
But a needle jab alone won’t fix race relations
And even social media can’t give us our salvation
(CHORUS)
Almost sixty years and we’re still downward sloping
The Middle east and Europe are still exploding
We don’t have flying cars but drones have rockets loading
We haven’t trod on Mars and the Moon is still provoking
Oligarchs dictators and warlords are goading
A weapon called AI with organic life eroding
Lost your mind boy, that’s AI boy . . .
(CHORUS)
Such a great song about American hypocrisy. Settlers don't shame their so called "government" like this anymore. They're like frogs boiling in water now.
Transcendent
Time to play this song more.
My dad used to play this on a gibson acoustic for my fam as a kid. Then i saw it on my childhood fave show the ateam. The words are as poignant today as then…maybe more so.
yes the eastern world is in turmoil but helped by england and the usa !! it is the eve of destruction and no cease fire !!!!!!!!!!! is everyone fu…. ked ????????? This is 2024 theme song
This came out when I was a kid. With a voice like that I'm surprised he didn't become a superstar. Great song.
Love the songand Barry, but ghat isn't singing.
I wish I remembered this back in '65.
But then, I was one,
But it still is THE protest song.
The Eastern world, it is explodin'
Violence flarin', bullets loadin'
You're old enough to kill but not for votin'
You don't believe in war, but what's that gun you're totin'?
And even the Jordan river has bodies floatin'
But you tell me
Over and over and over again, my friend
How you don't believe
We're on the eve of destruction
Don't you understand what I'm trying to say
Can't you feel the fears I'm feeling today?
If the button is pushed, there's no runnin' away
There'll be no one to save with the world in a grave
Take a look around you boy, it's bound to scare you, boy
And you tell me
Over and over and over again, my friend
How you don't believe
We're on the eve of destruction
Yeah, my blood's so mad, feels like coagulatin'
I'm sittin' here just contemplatin'
I can't twist the truth, it knows no regulation
Handful of senators don't pass legislation
And marches alone can't bring integration
When human respect is disintegratin'
This whole crazy world is just too frustratin'
And you tell me
Over and over and over again, my friend
How you don't believe
We're on the eve of destruction
And think of all the hate there is in Red China
Then take a look around to Selma, Alabama
Ah, you may leave here for four days in space
But when you return, it's the same old place
The poundin' of the drums, the pride and disgrace
You can bury your dead, but don't leave a trace
Hate your next door neighbor but don't forget to say grace
And you tell me
Over and over and over and over again, my friend
You don't believe we're on the eve of destruction
No no, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction
Larry Underwood brought me here.
L0ve that song eve of destruction
I love this song, found out my local bar has this on Karaoke
At 71 years of age, I never expected the SMOS! GIVE PEACE A CHANCE!
This song was so optimistic..
Who came here because of Mafia?
Love the zombie choreography!
The draft for Vietnam was in 1969 – so this song was ahead of it's time even for then.
2023
This was death metal before there was death metal
Here in the UK I went to school in a rather well to do area and the headmaster at school would arrive every morning on stage in a cape with a funny square hat.
The day would start with prayers and hymns like most British schools back then but one morning he stood on the stage and said I want you all to listen to this song. This guy stood every year to be an MP for the Labour party in a rather well to do area that was solidly Tory and 60 years later still is so no he was never elected. The record was this and for many it was the first timer hearing it.
It had a profound effect on the whole school for a few days and the one thing it achieved was turning kids in the direction of dropping out smoking weed and becoming hippies and very anti establishment. The establishment don't seem to have changed at all. I'm in my 70's now and still love the song.
2023 were on the eve of destruction
We're here now.
I'm watching this in 2023 and it is still as powerful.
