and today we’re testing out the brand
new benchmade
mini osborne let’s get to it
the benchmade mini osborne is a small
folding knife made right here in the usa
and when i say small i mean very small
its overall length is only around 6.7
inches
but that isn’t what makes this knife
feel so tiny
neither does a short 2.9 inch reverse
tonto blade
i mean i’ve owned smaller folding knives
such as the cali lego
automatic hold micro switch but this
knife
truly feels tiny what makes this knife
feel
so diminutive is it’s extremely
lightweight and thinness
i swear i’ve held pans with more head
it’s almost like holding a hypodermic
needle
watch where you’re going needle dick it
only weighs around two ounces and
honestly feels it
the scales are black lightly textured
g10 and despite the smooth fill are
actually quite grippy
and you know what to be honest elegant
so now i think you’re all bad or what
it also comes with a fancy little black
drawstring bag carrying if you don’t
want to use a pocket clip
fancy really is a key word when i think
of the benchmade mini osborne
it takes a classic osborne design and
shrinks it down
while also adding fancy details to class
it up
the devil is in the details and this
knife has them
first off the sexy and functional
reverse tanto tip blade is made from cpm
s30v steel encoded in a black finish
that looks terrific
the benchmade logo is laser etched on
one side of the blade
while the other side has the osborne
logo and the blade still etched in
the black thumb stud adorns both sides
of this very narrow blade
this is quite easily the thinnest
folding knife i have ever owned
i mean look at the switch on this knife
it is so
thin imagine the tolerances for this
it’s legit amazing moving on to the
scales
the fancy black tuxedo motif is
continuing with black g10 scales with a
subtle pin drop texture
that feels smooth to the touch and is
all screwed together with black matching
hardware
very sexy contrasting the black scales
and hardware is a satin silver axis lock
leather
honestly i would have preferred if that
were black as well
but it seems to me like manchester
united just didn’t want anybody
complaining that they couldn’t find the
locking mechanism
the style detail don’t stop there though
the scales are lined with a beautiful
blue liner and joined together with
matching blue barrel pins this feature
is absolutely gorgeous and i can’t stop
only and eyeing over it the blue liner
transitions to black with some jimping
near the pivot
for extra grip the jimping matches the
mini theme of this knife as
it is very slight but feels comfortable
to the touch
the handle is slim and has a nice mirror
guard but it’s just a bit too short for
my hands
the mini osborne has a mini deep pocket
clip that is finished in black as well
and has a fancy split design the pocket
clip feels comfortable in the hand and
doesn’t show up my pockets
opening and closing this knife is done
with ease due to the patented access
lock
this is my first axis lock knife and
have to say
it is fun to play with and i find myself
grabbing the knife often just to fiddle
with it
overall the knife design is fancy classy
and functional
i love it but i wish it was a little bit
bigger

even the blur one of my smaller knives
it’s way bigger and smaller shots of
shuffle
as you can see the mini osborne is
warped by these knives
and almost seems too dainty for any real
work
so how did it perform the mini osborne
has performed extremely well
easily surpassing my initial
expectations it came sharp right out of
the box
and efficiently accomplished all the
cutting and slicing tasks i’ve thrown at
it
it powered through tough clamshell
packages and sliced apples and tomatoes
with ease
on task that i had to put some leverage
on the blade the lock felt strong
and gave me confidence that despite its
small stature
it wouldn’t break the blade shape
allowed it to stab easily and gave me
precision
for more delicate attacks such as
opening fragile packages
and mail the handle despite its smooth
touch
was actually quite good and i was able
to gut a couple of slimy rainbow trout
with ease
the thought of dropping the knife or
cutting myself didn’t pop into my head
once while using this knife
i was very pleasantly surprised by how
versatile this knife is
and i am exceptionally happy with this
performance
am i gonna chop wood with this thing no
but that’s why i also own a benchmade
bushcrafter
overall from the kitchen to the lake and
even opening ladders in the office
this knife does it all despite its
smaller stature
now it’s time to go over the build
quality of this knife first off the
grinds are fantastic and the flat grind
was sharp
right out of the box the balance on this
knife is terrific and i was able to
balance it on my fingertip
without too much trouble i mean it’s
harder than it looks
moving on i’m really amazed at the
tolerance of this knife
like the point where the swedge begins
it is so thin that it’s amazing to me
that they didn’t grind through the spine
of this thing the blade has not taken
any damage from testing and
everyday use and the black coating still
looks brand new
the blade centering is good despite me
tossing the knife around a bit and the
g10 scales feel great
overall this knife oozes quality which
brings us to value all in with tax
i spent around 190 bucks on this knife
let me keep it real guys when i first
opened the box and saw how tiny this
knife was
i was taken aback big time
i mean i really should pay more
attention to the specs
um before i order something online
because i was really surprised
190 bucks is not cheap
and i’m not rich you know this i always
tell you guys
so when i opened up this box and saw
this little tiny knife i was coming off
the butt
disappointed to say the least throwing
the fact that although it’s a really
good steal
s30v is not considered a premium or
super still anymore it has it for a
while honestly
and to add insult to injury you can buy
a hulk with
20 cv for less money i mean that is
super still
when you start looking at things that
way the value proposition on this knife
is not looking good put those thoughts
aside though and look at the entire
package
benchmade makes quality products right
here
in the united states of america that
they stand behind with a lifetime
warranty
and with the highly rated life sharp
program on top of that
g10 scales and s30v are still excellent
materials and the attention to detail
with the unique blue liners and barrel
pins are something you just don’t
see in knives really i mean it’s a it’s
a
ocean of black and gray knives
so it’s on the small side and you can
get knives with premium steel that will
perform as well
or better for cheaper i’ll give you that
but willow knives have the combination
of style allure and build quality
that the benchmade mini osborne
encompasses
ultimately that’s all for you to decide
so now we move on to my knife review
rating score
wow say that five times fast for all you
new crash courses this rating system is
something
i came up with to help me quantify and
rate my my collection and that’s a lot
of different categories such as blade
steel design performance etc
the system is biased towards premium
details and materials so premium knives
usually score better than budget knives
so
let’s see how this knife did the first
category rates
blade steel this knife uses tried and
true s30v which combines great corrosion
resistance with good durability and edge
retention
not to mention it’s not too hard to keep
sharp when it does eventually duel
in real world use this knife has cut
everything i’ve thrown at it and it’s
still razor sharp
haven’t had to sharpen it once i gave it
6 out of 10.
next up is handle slash scales
the g10 scales on the knife feel like a
million bucks and despite its smooth
texture
this knife hasn’t given me any issues
even when wet and slimy
i like to float it and the design makes
me zohan stiff
but it’s a tad small narrow for my hands
i gave it 8 out of 10.
the next category is value if this knife
was just a bit bigger
i would have rated it much higher in
this category the build quality
design and warranty are all great and
the materials in the knife
are top notch if not ultra premium but i
can’t deny the feeling of being
underwhelmed when i first
opened it in the end its performance
saved it from scoring terribly low
i gave this knife a four out of ten
moving on our next category grants up to
five extra points for build quality
coding stash paint and hardware the
build quality on the knife is impressive
and the blade has a fantastic coating
and the blue liners and barrel pins give
this knife
extra points for premium hardware easily
in the end
this knife scored four extra points out
of the possible five
next up is performance so i never go
into the individual slicing chopping
piercing and slashing extra points
i never do despite its petite size
though this knife was a great performer
and never felt me
the blade edge was sharp and has not
dueled at
all despite some tough tasks it was just
at home outdoors at the lake
as it was in the kitchen and i imagine
it’d be great for backpackers or hunters
looking for a small and lightweight edc
but don’t want to carry another bug out
in the end
i gave this knife a 6 out of 10.
the next category is pocket presents the
mini osborne is small
sleek and comfortable it’s so
lightweight that i forgot i was carrying
it and the mini deep pocket clip can be
configured
for left or right hand carry some might
penalize it for not having another carry
option
but i like using knives how they come
out of the box so it doesn’t really
matter too much to me
i gave it a 5 out of 5. finally we come
up to our last category
extra points this category grants up to
five points
based on subjective style special
features
and design the benchmade mini osborne is
a
dashing spy in a dark suit that doesn’t
mind getting dirty and likes to play
rough
from build quality to style and
usefulness this knife impressed me
i awarded it four extra points out of
five
in the end this knife scored a grand
total of 46 out of 75
not a bad score but for the price i was
hoping it would score higher
that score puts it slightly above my
kershaw cryo which is a great little
knife
that costs a lot less um but the score
also puts it under my microtech exec
which is a beautiful
and really expensive knife that has
limited functionality
to sum things up i think benchmade did
an excellent job on the benchmade mini
osborne
despite its small size the design works
well and it’s sexy as all get out
the axis lock is great and the benchmade
name carries an allure and prestige
that other knife companies can only
dream of
if only it was bigger though
maybe it’s time to start saving up for
that full-size osborne
