In the video Bill Burr on Rush & Geddy Lee, Bob and Doug McKenzie are a couple of hilarious Canadian siblings who starred in “Great White North”, a sketch which was introduced on SCTV for the show’s most liked season when it streamed by CBC Television in the 80’s. Bob is performed by comedian Rick Moranis and Doug McKenzie is performed by comic Dave Thomas. Although brought to life originally as an idea to both follow guidelines and make fun of legal Canadian content legislation, the two morphed into a pop culture smash hit in both Canada and the States. The pair soon became the focus of a an amazing comedy album, The Great White North, in 1981.

He actually does touch on one criticism that I've always had too and that's the robotic nature of them. Great live show but so predictable. Every tour had the exact set list..nothing spontaneous what so ever. I will say that Alex in his solos Def would come off more feel like and maybe even Ged bass stuff but Neil, as great as he was would be pretty robotic. It seems like he tried to remedy this a bit with Test for Echo and the switch to traditional grip and the drum lessons he took. Even the drum solos would come off so "scripted". Amazing band, players, songs etc but Bill isn't all wrong here. I'll even go on a limb here and say I actually love Geddys voice.

Bill I really love you and I got to say I was surprised at your take on Rush knowing that you are a drummer. But you never disappoint. Rush has been my go to band since 1977. Keep in mind he has also attacked Star Wars and its fans. It’s ok. Opinion is opinion. I don’t know many people who “get” rush. I make them listen to Rush and they smile politely, praying for Cardi B to play next. I’m all enthusiastic, saying “listen to what Alex ( or Geddy or Neil) is playing right there. Nothing. Ever. Listen to Bravado and try to to be moved. Or Headlong Flight. I dare ya.
Rush is my favorite band. Objectively, I totally get what he is saying. I have always found technically proficient music to be somewhat tough to listen to. Listen to Alan Holdsworth for more than 2 minutes. Dazzling, yes. Musically pleasant? Nope. That’s why pop music is so popular. Simple. Melodic. Bubblegum. Geddy’s voice aside, I think that the vocal melodies are similar from song to song. Especially the last few albums, all of which I own. I love them… but I understand.
I definitely feel like Bill is joking and just roasting them. Especially since he's a drummer himself, there's no way he doesn't respect the shit out of Neil, how can you not.
Rush was a thinking man's band. So it comes as no surprise that he cannot, at the very least, begin to comprehend their music. He's one of the funniest comics out there. But Jesus Christ is he fucking illiterate. So I'll give him a pass on this one since he doesn't know any better. Go fuck yourself, William Fredrick Burr.

You know what they say about opinions and assholes… assholes have a lot of opinions. My favorite bands are Zep, Rush, Floyd, and Tool. Which one is on top today depends on my mood. I can get what he's saying and that's fine. I have enough room in my head to appreciate Page's slop and Lifeson's precision. I still love you, though, Bill.
