Bob and Doug McKenzie in Bill Needle’s Shoot for the Stars
In the video Bill Needle’s Shoot for the Stars, Bob and Doug McKenzie are a couple of made up Canadian comedians who can been seen in “Great White North”, a sketch which was shown on SCTV – second city television for the show’s third season when it braodcast by the Canadian Broadcasting Channel in the eighties. Bob’s part is performed by comic Rick Moranis and the character Doug is played by Dave Thomas. It was made originally as a sketch to both please and make fun of dumb Canadian content rules, the pair became a pop culture success in both Canada and across the border. The characters later became the focus of a famous comedy album, The Great White North, in 1981.
Bill Needle doesn’t put up with nonsense, not even from his guests… Starring: Dave Thomas, Eugene Levy, and Rick Moranis

Rupert Holmes also wrote Timothy. Ha.
Needle was ruthless. Made Mike Wallace look nice.
My dad always found this skit funny
So much talent. Moranis doing Mangione was pure gold.
I love when Bill Needle gets mad. This guy has issues. I’d love it if he’d interview Donald Trump.
Knock your block off – lmao
It's awesome that his right hand seems to be damaged
Timeless comedy, yet why are there noodleheads who insist on spinning this narrative into the political field? That’s why today’s comedy smells like week old fish.
The Needler !!
One of the funniest things is that it's unlikely that any kids ever listened to the Pina Colada song.
Also, I don't know if Dave Thomas was parodying Bill O'Reilly, but he sure sounded like him!
SCTV always proves that good comedy is always timeless.
Those dark golds and browns scream early '80's.
Another show cut short due to annoying guests . Never antagonize Needle .
Big Bill Needle fan here, but somehow never saw this one. Thanks for posting!
This was one of my favourite sketches from the latter days of SCTV. Nasty, pointed comments about current (for the time) popular music, with several quotable lines. "I wanted the guy who wrote the Love Boat theme."
He's the original Duke Silver/Ron Swanson
Chuck Mangione— pure comedy gold!!!
I loved Bill Needle!!
We all hated that stupid hat Chuck wore
Levy doing Neil Sedaka's voice a tad lower
Ha ha ha. There should be a real TV show like this to put some of those conceited celebrities in their place.
SCTV is they way the world should still be . FUNNY and if you don’t like it you can get the hell off my show !
I love how they see them off the set with the same musical accompaniment as they entered with.
Dave Thompson is great as Bill Needle, in this sketch Dave’s right arm was actually in a cast which is why he’s hardly using it.
After all these years, I still remember Needle swatting Chuck Mangione's hat (and hair) off. That's comedy gold.
Can't count the times I've commented: "where is Bill Needle to throw this lying (Republican) jack@ss off the show?!"
And I thought Joe Franklin kicked ass. Celebrities knew they made it when they appeared on Bill's show.
