In the video Bob and Doug McKenzie – 12 Days of Christmas, Bob and Doug McKenzie are a couple of made up Canadian brothers who can been seen in “Great White North”, a segment which was featured on second city television for the show’s 3rd season when it was broadcast on CBC Television in the 1980s. The character Bob McKenzie is performed by actor Rick Moranis and Doug’s character is played by the comedian Dave Thomas. Regardless the fact it was brought to life originally as a joke to both follow guidelines and mock silly Canadian content demands, the pair turned into a pop culture success in both Canada and the United States. The McKenzie brothers went on to become the focus of a classic comedy album, The Great White North, in 1981.
I finally managed to finish this video on the 12th day of December. As I was making this video, it occurred to me. What exactly are the twelve days of Christmas? I mean, Bob and Doug bring this up in their song as well. Christmas happens during one day in December, on the 25th. All the days leading up to it are simply days within the month of the holiday. But when does the 12 days of Christmas actually begin and end?
I started this video on the 12th day, so does that mean that it begins on the 12th? That would only get you to the 24th day after that, but that isn’t Christmas Day, it’s Christmas Eve. So should the 12 days of Christmas start on the 13th, so that it can end on the 25th? That sounds unlucky. And what about Boxing Day? I mean it’s not a holiday that’s celebrated in North America, but it’s still part of the holiday month. It’s also when you can go out to the malls and get those great Boxing Day specials!
I wish that someone would clear this up for me. I’ve been wondering about this song for a long time. Also, what’s the deal with the gifts that this person is getting from her true love? Some of them are just bizarre and strange. 6 geese a laying? WTF is up with that? How are you able to gather together 6 geese that are ready to lay eggs? How do you figure that shit out? And where is this person supposed to put all that crap anyway? Where do they live, in a castle?
I was all for singing holiday/Christmas songs as a kid, but a lot of them are so outdated and obscure that they don’t make any sense in modern times. It’s time for us to start listening to more sensible, quality music, not this ridiculous fantasy swill. Anyway, I hope you all have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. And for those of you who don’t celebrate Christmas, to you I say Happy Holidays. Go and find whatever makes you merry this holiday and enjoy yourself. Don’t drink and drive!
