Bob and Doug McKenzie in Canadian Word Origins: Hoser
In the video Canadian Word Origins: Hoser, Bob and Doug McKenzie are two of strange Canadian siblings who can been seen in “Great White North”, a show which was aired on second city television for the show’s third season when it braodcast by CBC Television in the year 1980. Bob is played by hilarious comedian Rick Moranis and Doug’s character is created by the comedian Dave Thomas. Despite born originally as a joke to both satisfy and laugh about non sensical Canadian content statutes, the siblings became a pop culture sensation in both Canada and the United States. The McKenzie siblings became the focus of a bestselling comedy album, The Great White North, in 1981.
Canada has many unique words to describe things, such as two-four, double-double, chesterfield and poutine. I am exploring where those words come from.
A uniquely Canadian word, it was popularized by Bob and Doug McKenzie on SCTV, but where does the word come from?
Could be from hockey, could be from a criminal act…

Bob and Dougs impression isnt quite right, its a situation very much similar to how Jeff Foxworthy or Larry the Cable guy arent really representative of the groups they use to market themselves and as such nuance is lost along the way.
Hoser doesnt mean redneck, it means loser and its original origin is from either Maritime and/or Ontario Canadian backyard hockey leagues (There is some ambiguity as to the exact place.) where the after game care and maintenance of the ice surface went to the losing team, which was done with hoses and shovels to smooth the frozen surface.
As a result over time hoser became synonymous with loser.
Take off you hoser!!!
🙂
Hoser is not good. Hoosier here in the US is a dignified term.
It's the first one.
Hoser steals gas with a hose
Very interesting. THANK YOU!!!
Must mean loser.
