In this episode of Adventures with Purpose, we travel to Atchison, Kansas from Oregon in search of Billie and Mary Black. There is no evidence of foul play and it is believed they drove themselves into the river intentionally.

Billie and Mary have one son together. Billie, who was stressed from having to care for Mary, told their son it would be better for him if his parents weren’t around. It’s been stated by authorities that there have been several possible sightings of them, but they have been discounted.

Their car has never been located. One theory is that they drove, accidentally or intentionally, into the Missouri River, but there is no evidence to this theory.

Bob Black’s brother, Buddy Black, of Lexington, Mo., thinks he knows what happened. Others echo his thoughts.

“They’re in the river,” Buddy Black said. “Where else would they be? We’ve gone through a year. I want to think it was an accident. But in the forefront of my mind, I think it was deliberate.”

Mary Lou, who was 72 at the time of her disappearance, and Bob, who was 74, were high school sweethearts.

They grew up in Orrick, Mo., and graduated from the town’s high school.

After graduation, the two married. Mary attended the University of Central Missouri to become a teacher. Bob headed to an engineering school in Kansas City.

The Blacks had one son, Kurt. In 1971, Bob Black built a ranch-style, brick house for his wife at 2411 Pacific St. on the outskirts of Atchison.

Neighbors described the Blacks as quiet and reclusive.

Mary was in the later stage of Alzheimer’s.

Bob knew what his wife was facing.

He watched his mother and mother-in-law suffer from the disease, and he was upset about his own health.

Bob had a severe case of diabetes, was missing some toes, took insulin daily, had difficulty walking, and didn’t see well.

Buddy Black recalled a conversation Kurt had with his father when they were driving to look into a nursing home for Mary. Bob told his son it would be better for him if his parents weren’t around.

The end?

Kurt Black had tried to contact his parents several times. He became worried and drove to their house Sept. 11. When he arrived, he found the lights on, their drivers’ licenses, a checkbook and cash.

The most critical thing he found was that his father’s insulin was left inside the refrigerator. At 7 p.m. Sept. 12, Kurt Black contacted the sheriff’s office.

Our search for Bob and Mary continues.

  1. The great thing about all of this is even though it's sad and it's heartbreaking they make jokes to keep it light which I find 100% okay because these finds are always heartbreaking

  7. Such a sad story. If he did take their lives, I totally understand why. I don't condone it but I get it. My hubby was in an electric wheelchair 25 years. His last 5 yrs, he couldn't even scratch his face. It was hell for him and extremely physically and emotionally stressful on me. I could have never taken his life but I understand
Love what yall do. Many blessings for strength, stamina, and success. Blessings, julie

  8. No wonder the current is so strong you’re in the MO River. There are parts up here that if you literally put one foot in even with a life jacket on in would drag you under and sometimes they still don’t find you.

  9. I still wonder if you were in the UK how many vehicles will be in the river Humber massive bridge over it for vehicles to pass, it's also known a few have unfortunately committed suicide from the bridge itself keep up the good work shame we didn't have equipment like this year's ago

  10. Thank you for what you do. I find myself teary eyed at the end of the episodes where loved ones are found. After caring for my mom for almost 10 years due to alzheimer's disease, this case touches my heart. I would like to think out of love they left this world together. My hope is their son finds peace. Cherish the good memories, focus on the love they shared and let go of all the rest❤
