Bob’s partThe character Bob is played by the funny Rick Moranis and the character Doug is created by Dave Thomas. Regardless the fact it was brought to life originally as filler to both satisfy and make fun of network Canadian content demands, the two turned into a pop culture hit in both Canada and America. I hope EG Gene wins $100M and then Trump has to announce publicly that he doesn't have it.
I suppose the conceit is that the characters as written are rather against-type of the actors being portrayed in those roles. For example, the father character, Willy Loman, is a slight man who feels self-conscious and insecure in his masculinity, which is something Ricardo Montalbán probably never was a day in his life.
Rick Moranis as George Carlin is wearing cool as f*ck skull t-shirt, does anybody know if its referencing something like a band or album cover?
Better than the real thing
The George Carlin parody is on point.
I had no idea Rick Moranis was so amazing
Sctv was absolutely the best. My dad and i used to watch it every Saturday back in the 70s after snl. In the last 10 yrs i dont think ive met more than 1 or 2 people who have even heard of sctv. Ive shown many people, mostly younger, clips of sctv. Most of them think its some of the funniest stuff theyve ever seen and wonder why no one is doing anything like this today. Most are especially imprest with the wrighting.
Rick Moranis: I was a big George Carlin fan. How could I not be? But there came a point where I saw him on a talk show, and he was reading off cards. I had a feeling I could look like him, so I did an impression of him reading off notes and telling lazy jokes. Years went by and I was at an awards show. Across the aisle was Carlin, sitting there. We looked at each other, and he just said, “Brutal. Brutal, man. Brutal.” I sort of shrugged and gestured about how much I love him. But I never really met him. Years later, after he passed away, I spoke to his daughter, Kelly. She wanted to use the SCTV clips in a show she was putting together. I told her, “Look, I want you to understand that, believe it or not, that was really done out of reverence.” She said, “No, you don’t understand. It had a profound effect on him. He wasn’t aware that he was really being lazy. He was unhappy and wasn’t doing the kind of work that he wanted to be doing. And your impression caused him to change his approach.” God, am I glad I spoke to her.
This is really good. Miss these guys.
Such a clever show.
Back then, Rick Moranis made me see George Carlin in a whole different light
Can't be any funnier, so awesome!
Slipping in and out of their actual characters was brilliant.
SCTV had a great cast throughout it's run but for me, Levy and Short were the 2 standouts.
As much as I love SCTV, this sketch is very dated and really not that funny.
Rick Moranis did George Carlin spot on. I hope he's good these days. Rick that is. RIP George.
can someone explain the coffee references? so many details in this, and ridiculously funny!
Had to dig it up in comment replies, but the spot on John Belushi is Tony Rosato. Just a prime slice of SCTV all around, here. Poking fun directly, slyly juxtaposing the actors’ various roles, through the fourth wall.. a whole lot going on.
Jon Stewart and Judd Apatow brought me here.
Bones and Khan going at it again.
10 pts to anyone who knows why Willy/Ricardo sells clocks in this skit.
This is probably one of the best belushi clips out there.
"JIM!…I mean Dad…..she's unconcious Jim" XD
I never knew I needed this
I had the misfortune of watching the Dustin Hoffman version of "Death" and this was so much more entertaining! I truly don't get the allure of the original play at all. In the DVD extras there was a segment not unlike this satire. The look on the face of the author of the play was priceless as Dustin Hoffman told him his motivations for the character of Willy Loman were all wrong!
wow…. just wow…
I remember wasting a few weeks in English class on "Death of a Salesman". If we could have watched this instead, it wouldn't have been wasted.
I love the part where Carlin (Rick Moranis) says-(3:35) -"there's RED wine and there's WHITE wine but there's no GREEN wine–there's green grapes but no green wine…WHY" LOL!!!
Dave Thomas !!!
This is comedy on such a high level. SCTV was so ahead of its time………I cannot stop laughing at this sketch
"Cora", the Coffee Lady from the Maxwell House commercials meets the Wicked Witch!
