Transcript:
[Music] hello and welcome to Hollywood at home
from Arizona public media I’m Victoria
Lucas
are you in the mood to watch something
deep and thought provoking
if so I am so very sorry because the
first movie in tonight’s double bill is
director Mel Brooks Interstellar comedy
Spaceballs from 1987.
this spoof of Star Wars Star Trek and
just about every sci-fi Adventure film
ever produced comes jam-packed with
witty dialogue more sight gags than you
can count
and a whole galaxy full of downright
silliness
one critic discussing Brooke’s
filmmaking style wrote
in all his films including Blazing
Saddles and Young Frankenstein no one
has ever sat down to watch a Mel Brooks
movie for its complex narrative
and tonight’s film is no exception
Spaceballs delivers all the jokes and
irreverence that Brooks does best
and yet it’s clear that Brooks loves and
honors the movie genres he parodies
Brooks co-wrote produced and directed
the film
he also plays two supporting roles
because it’s his movie and he can do
whatever he wants
the movie also Stars Then newcomer Bill
Pullman as a Starship pilot John Candy
as his sidekick the half man half dog
barf
Daphne Zuniga as Princess Vespa the
object of their Quest and Rick Moranis
as the ridiculously evil villain Dark
Helmet
others in The Supporting Cast include
Brooks regulars Dick Van Patten and Dom
DeLuise
and keep an eye out for John Hurt in a
memorable Cameo appearance in which he
plays John Hurt
I’ll be back after the movie with a
couple of behind the scenes stories
about the production as well as the
second movie in tonight’s double feature
the 1963 comedy Extravaganza it’s a mad
mad mad mad world featuring the most
impressive array of comic Talent ever to
appear together in one movie
but for now please sit back and enjoy
classic jokes and Intergalactic
silliness from Mel Brooks it’s
Spaceballs
