Transcript:
this review is a live action Disney film
that was a massive hit back in 1989.
Honey I Shrunk the Kids
it stars Rick Moranis as Wayne salinski
a quirky scientist and inventor of
off-the-wall gadgets who has been
designing a laser machine that he hopes
could be capable of shrinking objects
and then reverting them back to normal
size however every object he tries to
shrink explodes
Mr zielinsky are you trying to tell me
that suddenly size is no longer relative
well that’s right Professor Frederickson
that all matter is made up of not only
density but of empty space and if we can
proportionally reduce the amount of
empty space in any given object we can
thereby shrink the object where’s your
proof
when Einstein came up with the atomic
bomb did they ask him to prove that it
worked you Mrs zelinski are hardly
Einstein
I picked the name you have however
managed to shrink one thing the size of
this audience
married to real estate agent Diane
played by actress Marsha straussman
their hard-working Fresno California
Lifestyles have put their marriage on
the rocks
dad had an argument last night and mom
spent the night at Grandma’s I think she
just needed a rest
they have two children teenage daughter
Amy played by Amy O’Neal an intelligent
but nerdy son Nick played by Robert
Oliveri and a wired-haired Jack Russell
Terrier named cork
next door neighbors Russ Thompson played
by Matt frewer and his wife Mae
portrayed by actress Christine
Sutherland are preparing for a family
fishing trip
in the land of the living
really there’s a big fish out there with
your name on it
fishing’s your thing dad not mine their
two sons Ron played by Jared Rushton and
teenage son Russ played by Thomas Wilson
Brown are less enthusiastic Russ seems
more interested in the next door
neighbor Amy
while Wayne and Diane leave the house
Ron accidentally hits a baseball through
the silinski’s Attic Window activating
Wayne’s machine and blocking the full
power of the laser beam thus allowing
the machine to function properly
as Nick and Ron go to the attic to
retrieve the baseball they are shrunk
soon after Russ and Amy are shrunk as
well
[Music] Nick what happened we’re all the size of
boogers
be quiet
Nick what did you do
we have to get Dad I don’t know what to
do
the kids are unable to alert Wayne to
their predicament up here Dad Nick Amy
hey Amy your day’s here
[Music] and he sweeps them into the trash and
takes them out to the curb escaping into
the front lawn the four decide that
their only option is the long Trek back
to the house
house it’s the equivalent of 3.2 miles
it’s a long way even for a man of
science soon Wayne realizes that the
kids were shrunk by his laser and begins
a desperate search in the backyard for
them
the machine works do the kids know well
yeah the kids know that’s great that’s
not that great why I Shrunk the Kids
what and the Thompson kids too they’re
about this big they’re in the backyard
what threw them out with the trash
stay here I’ll get the door
yes
did uh you report some missing children
well there must be some mistake ours are
in the backyard right honey
Diane soon joins him and they inform a
skeptical Russ and may why didn’t you
tell us earlier
well until now the machine just blew
things up
you simply blew up my kids oh no no it’s
the machine had blown up the kids
there’d be pieces of them everywhere
sorry I look I’m positive about this
okay the machine shrunk our kids you’re
the one who need to shrink solinsky in
the meantime the kids must navigate
through ants
cigarettes yeah it’s Dad’s brand he told
us he quit
it up again
no he only smokes when he’s really
worried about something
bees scorpions sprinklers
and lawn mowers all while just a quarter
of an inch in size
directed by Joe Johnson and his
directorial debut this movie was an
unexpected box office hit it grossed 222
million dollars worldwide and became one
of the highest grossing American films
of 1989. the movie was released June 23
1989 the same day as Batman but
ironically that film was such a hit that
many moviegoers who found Batman tickets
sold out decided to go see Honey I
Shrunk the Kids so Batman being such a
big hit actually helped the box office
intake of Honey I Shrunk the Kids
this film was huge for Disney and
inspired an amusement park ride called
Honey I Shrunk the Audience which opened
at Epcot Disneyland Tokyo Disneyland and
Disneyland Paris throughout the 1990s
the rides at all locations closed in the
year 2010.
despite taking place in a suburb of
Fresno California this movie was
actually shot in the back lot of a film
studio in Mexico City in 1988.
the original title of this movie was
teeny weenies
but the studio thought this sounded too
childish so the title was changed to
grounded to appeal to a more mature
audience
later they changed the title to Disney’s
preference the big backyard
eventually the title became Honey I
Shrunk the Kids based on a line of
dialogue from the movie
a few actors were considered for the
lead role of Wayne zielinski prior to
filming Martin Short was considered
Chevy Chase was considered for the role
but he was busy filming National
Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation
so they offered the role to John Candy
declined but he recommended his old SCTV
buddy Rick Moranis Moranis got the role
and I think it is perfect for him
wow
I just gotta keep our eyes open
the special effects on this film were
awesome when I watched the movie
frequently as a kid back in the 1990s
and they hold up quite well even today
I will take these 1989 special effects
over the new age CGI effects any day of
the week this is an enjoyable movie and
I recommend Honey I Shrunk the Kids as
fun entertainment for the whole family
[Music]
