Bob and Doug McKenzie in Ian Thomas Band on SCTV
In the video Ian Thomas Band on SCTV, Bob and Doug McKenzie are a couple of hilarious Canadian comedians who were featured in “Great White North”, a skit which was introduced on SCTV for the show’s most watched season when it got sold to CBC Television in the year 1980. Bob’s character is played by comic Rick Moranis and Doug McKenzie is brought to life by the comedian Dave Thomas. It was created originally as a skit to both fulfill and laugh about silly Canadian content policies, the two grew up to be a pop culture hit in both Canada and the USA. The brothers went on to become the focus of a classic comedy album, The Great White North, in 1981.
The Ian Thomas Band was a Canadian band from the mid to late ’70s and would fall into the “soft rock” catagory, if you’re into compartmentalizing things. This appearance was from an SCTV episode where Ian’s real life brother, Dave Thomas, plays one half of the clueless duo “Bob and Doug McKenzie”.

"Uh, Ian, uh, how long have you, like, been together?"
"Oh man, I've never been together."
Bob McKenzie’s brother.
You think he wrote this song about Buzz Sherwood?
go pete!!
Johnny P. rockin' that flute! Love it!
Just great, have loved this since I saw it way back in the day. Band is hitting on all cylinders.
Great!!!
Love this Great Canadian !!
The 1 "dislike" must b a fuckin' hoser.
Is that Count Floyd on keyboards?
Such a clever intro and melody with the flute
I live near Buffalo & we get to hear Canadian music from Toronto stations. I always liked Ian Thomas.
The harmonies are absolutely flawless.
Of course his brother Dave was able to help with his appearance on the show, however, without the talent it would not have been possible. These songs are beautiful
Humanity has been forsaken- great rock lyric
this rox!
ahhhhhhhhhhhh. 😉
amazing tune
Loved it then and still love it now.
Great song, and SCTV was the most inventive and creative comedy series of all time.
Lou Pomanti on keys, Peter Mueller on guitar.
Take off, eh. That was a great guitar solo on the outro.
Gives me chills. I'm straight now, but I what I wouldn't give for one lost weekend circa 1979 in New York with an endless supply of coke and booze.
One of the BEST live bands ever!!! Their live stage show was just like listening to the album.
This band, like April Wine, just did not catch American appeal. Too bad. They were great. I remember seeing Glider perform several times in Toronto bars after this show went dead. They were great! I am a huge proponent of Can con and I am not sure how these guys missed. Sanatana covered Hold On and I hope that scored them some big Bobs.
As far as I remember EVERYTHING, including the lead vocal was live. But then the background vocals were doubled after the fact to fatten them up. And then the track was re-mixed. I would never have let that guitar solo go if I had had a choice. The keyboard player is Lou Pomanti.
sorry, not live, lip synced to a live track recorded before the show
This is the sexiest song I've ever heard.
yes. read the book by Dave Thomas. It's awesome.
