‘My One and Only Love’ – jazz piano tutorial by Doug Mckenzie. There are lots of excellent versions of this on Youtube to study. It is almost always played either in Eb or C. I have alternated both in this video tutorial.
The first chorus is played as solo piano – I have tried to offer lots of alternative harmony options.
The second chorus is played as a piano solo in a simulated piano trio setting – bass and drum backing care of the excellent Real Tracks add-on to PG music’s ‘Band in a Box’.
I will post the video and piano midi file (free to download) on my website
and add it to my DVD along with the transcription in printable pdf format. You can also purchase the transcription separately (along with the backing track) $1.20. Details are on my website.

  1. I play bass along with your music.Learning to play upright .Your chords are awesome. Great learning process for me. Some times it sounds like the bass notes are on your left hands and other times seems like a real upright.

  2. Hello, I'm from Belarus, I do not speak English well, I would like to receive audio without piano, only bass guitar and drums, that I myself would play this piece, how can I get audio?

  3. fabulous as usual . I am wondering how to make the trio section sound good without a trio-i.e. solo piano . I guess I will just fit in a few extra notes in the left hand or it will sound a bit too sparse ….

  4. I suppose the #5 here could be analysed here as just a brief tension that is rapidly resolved to the 6th. You often hear this as part of an internal voice that moves chromatically up from and sometimes back to the 5th (as in 'Brazil'). It certainly is a very commonly heard sound on a Major chord – and it is sometimes left hanging without resolution.

  5. Hi Doug… Currently trying some of your ideas in a guitar chord/melody… Beautiful arrangement on your part… Say, could you explain why the #5 on Abmaj7 on 0:23 (you voiced it c/ab) sounds so nice ? Seeing that it's not a note in the parent key of ebmaj… There is only one mode i know of with the #5 on a maj chord, the third mode of melodic minor. Is it possible that this chord is borrowed from this scale ? Thanks for these amazing videos ! 🙂

  6. Hi Pacrii
See below for some details – I use programs from PG music – BIAB and 'PowerTracks' – and also Sonar at times. All programs require lots of editing after recording to create a meaningful transcription – particularly when they are so literal in notating exactly how you play.

  7. It is from Band in a Box – with the 'Real Tracks' add-on.
BIAB produces a backing from the chords that are typed in. The bass and drums are much more realistic than those produced from a midi file as they use sampled short recorded phrases that are cobbled together – instead of just sampled single notes as in midi. So more of the subtleties in the bass line for example can be captured in the backing – slides, fingerboard noises, unpitched notes etc.

  8. Hi Alan
I suppose that before recording I will get to know the tune very well, and test some of the possibilities. Generally then – with a lot of options available, I will record several takes using the basic leadsheet , and pick the best.
Before the second half of this one, I had to stop recording and start the backing track before re-commencing. This was totally improvised sticking with the basic harmony – I had typed the chords into BIAB before, so I recorded as midi in BIAB while filming.

  9. Doug,

Just beautifully played. This is a song I always liked very much and also played a number of times. I love your modulations a harmonizing!

    Keep swingin´

  10. One of my favorite tunes Doug. Thank you.
I would like to ask. How much preparation do you put in before you press "record"?
Please tell me. I hope the answer will not make me feel too inadequate!
