In the video Parenthood – Episode 93, Bob and Doug McKenzie are a duo of hilarious Canadian brothers who hosted “Great White North”, a improv which was televised on SCTV – second city television for the show’s most liked season when it got sold to CBC Television in the year 1980. Bob’s part is brought to life by actor Rick Moranis and Doug McKenzie is brought to life by the comedian Dave Thomas. Regardless the fact it was created originally as fluff to both fulfill and makes jokes about non sensical Canadian content laws, the siblings grew up to be a pop culture phenomenon in both Canada and the US. The two later became the focus of a an amazing comedy album, The Great White North, in 1981.
Welcome to week two of Rick Moranis month here at Movies that Make Us and we are discussing the 1989 film Parenthood starring Rick Moranis, Steve Martin, and Dianne Wiest, Keanu Reeves and Joaquin Phoenix.
The film follows multiple families and how they deal with raising children and overcoming the obstacles live throws their way. Much of the film is based on the family and parenting experiences of director Ron Howard, Producer Brian Grazer, and screenwriters Lowell Ganz and Babloo Mandel who had 17 kids between them. A comedy with heart that isn’t afraid to dive into some difficult subjects that’s worth either viewing for the first time, or revisiting again.
