The first scene is to make fun of united Statiens not knowing where they are on the map
My favorite Canadian clip from the Simpsons was when Homer was so bored on a summer day, stuck on the couch watching the CFL draft on TV. Lol. They announced a player receiving several "Rouges" the previous season, which is a term that never gets used anymore for capitalizing on the opposing team failing to punt or field goal
Lots of these are accurate. They do refer to my home province of Saskatchewan a lot. Then again, Matt Groening’s dad was from Saskatchewan. This wasn’t in the video, but one of my favourite clips was when Homer would not support the Isotopes baseball team and Bart says “The team needs your support, Dad. They have already threatened to move to Moose Jaw.” Yes, Moose Jaw is a real place.
Your accent is like haggis to the ear.
I, as a Canadian, approve. We have to all have a good laugh once in a while.
The creator of the Simpsons Matt Groening’s Father Homer, and his extended family are from the Province of Saskatchewan in Canada.
They left out the part where they went in the drugstore and scooped out pills as though they were in bulk foods
The two boats arguing with each other might have been inspired by what as far as I know was a real communication between Canadians and an American military ship off the Atlantic coast. I was first shown the transcript by a teacher in the early 2000's, so it's at least a couple of decades old, but it goes something like this:
Canadians: "change course (specific directions) to avoid collision."
Americans: "No, change your course (specific directions) to avoid collision."
Canadians: "Negative, (repeats instructions)"
and it gets more and more heated, the American ship identifies its name and lists off all its weaponry and the power of the American navy, etc. and the Canadians reply:
"This is a lighthouse. Your call."
If anyone's curious, the French guy at 7:48 is actually translating everything the other guy is saying correctly. I don't think that would actually happen, though. You see that repetition when politicians give speeches, and official government documents have the text repeated, but with a small group of people like that they would just ask them which language they preferred and send in the appropriate guy.
Also mounties don't actually dress like that while doing their normal job, that's their formal uniform for ceremonies and stuff, but I get why the show would do that.
6:25 "Obviously curling is a Scottish sport..." Huh. I actually didn't know that.
