Bob and Doug McKenzie in Reaction To SCTV (Bob And Doug McKenzie – Great White North)
In the video Reaction To SCTV (Bob And Doug McKenzie – Great White North), Bob and Doug McKenzie are a group of fictional Canadian brothers who were featured in “Great White North”, a improv which was broadcast on SCTV – second city television for the show’s most watched season when it streamed by the Canadian Broadcasting Channel in 1980. Bob’s part is created by comic Rick Moranis and Doug’s part is performed by comic Dave Thomas. It was created originally as a skit to both satisfy and make fun of stupid Canadian content guidelines, the pair morphed into a pop culture smash hit in both Canada and the United States. Strange Brew, full feature film.
I see a few others have mentioned it.
I think you'd enjoy watching it Mert.
Bob and Doug MacKenzie, beer, doughnuts, hockey etc.
Are you Glaswegian ?? Love the accent!!
…back bacon and beer…
They are legendary
Dave Thomas is the other actor who appeared in Grace under fire.
I was waiting for this!
They were so funny . . .
I was working with some of my Canadian military brothers and sisters for NATO in Europe. The Canadians came into the dining hall. I greeted them with hey, take off, eh.
OMG… Several faces lit up and I was regaled with quotes and lines from the McKenzie brothers for most of the next hour. You could tell what a genuine fondness they had for the special wit and comedy of Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas.
Here's to you, comrades. May your heart be light, your sorrows be few, and your mug of Moosehead beer ever full.
Beernog is part of the skit. Nobody drinks that anywhere.
"hose head" aka hoser [14:13 in]
born in 1959 AB Canada; Bob & Doug MacKenzie in Canada were kind of like Cheech & Chong were in the US ~ Canadian humor is it's own thing. kind of British ~ not British ~
Legendary
Definition of "hoser": A clumsy, boorish person, especially an uncouth, beer-drinking man. Originated in the Maritime provinces in Canada. Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas
Hoser is equivalent to American Hillbilly.
I grew up with these guys and love them (FYI I am 68). Iconic Canadian. Most of my generation love these guys. They have a movie too.
Mert, can you have the volume higher when doing these videos. it is so hard to hear thee video your showing and my hearing aids are turned up on full volume.
I’m 54 now and was just a kid when these guys were on. They ended up making a Christmas record of the twelve days of Christmas, huge hit.
Take Off Geddy Lee & Bob & Doug McKenzie check it out
I lived in Canada around this time and these guys were heroes – hysterical! They held a parade for them in their small home town and everyone came out to line the sidewalks and waited until finally the only vehicle in the parade, which was rheir van, came by and the two of them had the side door open and were sitting on cases of Molson Canadian and toasring the crowd with their beers.
These characters become more funny to me when I learned the story of why they exist. The Canadian network had a rule that a portion of the content has to be "Culturally Canadian", and the SCTV writers were like "What the hell does that mean?" So they added this sketch to the tail end of shows, in the part that was going to get cut for time from the US export version, trying to satirize the network's requirement for "Canadian content". It was just improv chatter, done at the end of the filming day when the rest of the cast had gone home.
The guys started this bit because the network (CBC) told them they needed more 'Canadian content' so they came up with this silliness and it just took off. They even had Bob and Doug McKenzie days in Toronto and everyone was calling everyone a hosehead/hoser. Good times. .
The Bob and Doug movie Strange Brew which amazingly stars Max Von Sydow is loosley based on Hamlet. Substitute "F Off " or take off and hosebag for hosehead. This show is SCTV reponse to Canadian Content Rules AKA Cancon!
SCTV is pure gold.
watch the kids in the hall if you like this type of distinctly Canadian humour:)
You need to watch their movie called Strange Brew by Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas, they're the comedians who do Bob and Doug McKenzie
If you have an opportunity, please watch Strange Brew. This is the movie that 'Bob and Doug Mckenzie' made back in 1983. It is absolutely hilarious!
Dave Thomas now lives in LA and is a producer and writer for various shows. He was in two episodes of Bones and was a producer on it for years.
You should also check out the movie Canadian Bacon, it is one of John Candy’s last films.
the other guy is Dave Thomas. He didn't make it as big as Rick Maranis but he had a good run. He played characters in some movies with Mike Meyers, I believe. Dave Thomas' brother was Canadian rock singer and songwriter Ian Thomas who was very good but decided to stay in Canada. When asked what it was like to be a star in Canada, Ian Thomas said, "You don't make enough money to buy a car, but everyone recognizes you on the bus." Typical Canadian self-deprecating humour. Thanks for recognizing it.
