Bob and Doug McKenzie in Reaction To SCTV (Classic Canadian Comedy)
In the video Reaction To SCTV (Classic Canadian Comedy), Bob and Doug McKenzie are a duo of made up Canadian family members who created “Great White North”, a improv which was broadcast on SCTV – second city television for the show’s most liked season when it moved to the Canadian Broadcasting Channel in the eighties. Bob’s partThe character Bob is created by hilarious comedian Rick Moranis and Doug McKenzie is acted by Dave Thomas. The sketch was developed originally as a joke to both satisfy and laugh about dumb Canadian content policies, the siblings transformed into a pop culture sensation in both Canada and across the border. The McKenzie brothers soon became the focus of a classic comedy album, The Great White North, in 1981.
Reaction To SCTV (Classic Canadian Comedy)
This is my reaction to SCTV and their ‘Half Wits’ sketch. Second City Television was a popular comedy show in Canada in the 70’s and 80’s. SCTV launched the career of many famous Canadian comedians and personalities. like John Candy, Eugene Levy, Catherine O’Hara, Rick Moranis and many more.

What you just saw was an episode from SCTV. John Candy was from Toronto, but the rest, Eugene levy, Martin short, Dave Thomas were all from my hometown, Hamilton.
you should watch in living color, with Hommie the clown!.
SNLripped this off, but was hysterical
Crack me up!
Check out John Candy as Babe Ruth in a spoof of the 1948 biopic "The Babe Ruth Story".
The guy with the big nose is Joe Flaherty, possibly my all time biggest comedy hero. His work on SCTV is legendary but sadly that's when he sort of hit his peak. Still, I love seeing him in anything…most times just bit characters.
SCTV was amazing. Had you helpless with laughter sometimes
Growing up in Ontario, we all thought SCTV stood for Stupid Canadian Television. Loved it then and still.
True Canadian humour of the highest quality like what we did in the 70s and try to imitate the Americans with game and drama TV shows. Right down to the bells, lights and the ding ding dings..LOL…Second City, SCTV, Rick Mercer and above all the Trailer Park Boys are always a belly laugh as my grandma used to say in Nova Scotia…
Has anyone asked you to check out Hilarious House of Frightenstein? It’s from Hamilton, Ontario, from the 70’s.
That’s Martin Short in the red sweater.
SCTV's Murder in the Cathedral was pretty awesome. So are the Chucky the Budgie skits, Perry Como: Still Alive special, and the Days of the Week soap opera spoof series. Oh, and of course, Monster Horror Chiller Theatre.
Lawrence is played by Martin Short
Sctv hands down top 5 best sketch comedy series of all time. For me just edging out Saturday Night Live(Season 1-5), and up there with Monty Python Flying Circus, Kids In The Hall, Black Adder, The Goodies, The Young Ones
Loved SCTV. It's too bad you can't really watch full episodes anywhere. Even the DVD collections were all broken up. Besides this skit, one of my other favourites is Andrea Martin and Catheriine O'Hara in "English for Beginners"…comedy gold.
From what I remember, any episode was good and worth watching. But The Great White North segments were my favourite and John Candy my favourite of the show.
Martin short, Eugene levy, John Candy, and some two other chicks..
A dish from Italy.. Sophia Loren.
Martin Short will do anything to look funny— fake teeth, bald caps, wigs, whatever it takes. Plus, his personality as Lawrence here comes off so heartfelt and genuine. Good actor.
Just slays Jeopardy with… Alex Trebell….(Eugene Levy) Even then, Alex Trebek was the host. Canadian. By all accounts, he loved this. He was one of our best.
SCTV was FAR funnier and smarter than SNL. No comparison.
Johnny Ola is a play on Johnny Olson from the Price is Right.
I liked the spoof when Ed Grimley was The Nutty Lab Assistant. John Cougar Mellencamp as he was known then was in the skit.
Really great!
Hilarious House of Frightenstein was so great! Billy Van was great! Educational, Had a science teacher Dr. Julius Sumner, Wolfman Jack and everybody's sidekick Igor with cool music. A great show to watch after smoking a joint…lol
The format for SCTV was the Chicago based Dinner Comedy Club circuit. These roving young comedians found this goofy fast pace skit comedy honing their skills and making a few bucks for the young actors. This troup then crossed the border to Big City Toronto Canada and plied their trade there. Why? Because Toronto has one of North America's largest Broadcast enterprises in the area which easily reaches out to a Big Portion of NY State.
Toronto also has a huge Stage Acting scene which provides employment to young upcoming Stars. Look at the list of SCTV members whom later went on to huge fame in Hollywood.
SCTV was fabulous for young writers, and the cost of the show was relatively cheap in comparison to the US Hollywood comedy scene for TV shows.
SCTV did a skit called High Q, a spoof of a show called Reach for the Top that was on Canadian TV for many years where teams from different high schools competed answering questions. At one point Alex Trebec was the host. I think that skit was even funnier than Half Wits, featuring Catherine OHara, John Candy and Andrea Martin, with Eugene as the host. There are also skits called sunrise semester which are super funny and their spoof of Leave it To Beaver. So many talented comedians from Canada got their start on this show. Eugene Levy, Catherine O'Hara, John Candy, Rick Moranis, Andrea Martin, Robin Duke, Tony Rosato, Harold Ramis, Dave Thomas, Joe Flaherty, Martin Short.
The people in this skit, left-to-right: Eugene Levy, John Candy, Andrea Martin, Martin Short.
The way to really appreciate a skit from SCTV is to watch an entire episode of SCTV. That will help you understand why they would make a game show like this one, for example; what is the state of SCTV that it would program such a show? Knowing that will better inform your reviews and opinions of anything you see from SCTV.
John Candy was not in home alone.
As an American, I am having difficulty placing your accent. Are you French?
Martin short in the red, my favourite skit, he did was when he was applying for a job as a bozo, the clown…..
lorne mickeals left there and started saturday night live
SCTV is a deep well of comedy gold. https://youtube.com/watch?v=JCxscU0hWok&feature=sharec
Eugene Levy as Syd Dithers and Andrea Martin as Edith Prickly if you can.
SCTV IS OVERRATED! It was the 4th best Canadian sketch comedy show of it's time.
1. BIZARRE
2. 4 ON THE FLOOR
3. WAYNE & SCHUSTER
4. SCTV
5. SMITH & SMITH
Mediocre sketches like Half Wits prove my point.
Watch BIZARRE Velcro Shirts, The Bigot Family, or Super Dave sketch.
4 ON THE FLOOR Boot to the Head, Lou & Hymie (they'll go mad), or Mr Canoe Head sketch.
WAYNE & SHUSTER Rinse the Blood Off My Toga, Shakespeare Baseball, or Cinderelton sketch.
SMITH & SMITH spun off into Me & Max, and THE RED GREEN SHOW.
IMO the funniest skits on SCTV are The Schmenge Brothers with John Candy and Eugene Levy. Absolutely hilarious, they even did an appearance in character on the David Letterman show. Please review them!
