Bob and Doug McKenzie in Reaction To SCTV – Night School High Q
In the video Reaction To SCTV – Night School High Q, Bob and Doug McKenzie are a duo of odd Canadian comedians who starred in “Great White North”, a ad lib skit which was streamed on SCTV for the show’s most popular season when it was broadcast on the Canadian Broadcasting Channel in the 80’s. Bob’s part is brought to life by actor Rick Moranis and the character Doug is brought to life by the comedian Dave Thomas. Even thoughFamously made originally as a sketch to both satisfy and laugh about silly Canadian content demands, the brothers grew up to be a pop culture success in both Canada and the US. The McKenzie siblings soon became the focus of a hit comedy album, The Great White North, in 1981.

The REAL show being parodied here was called "Reach for the Top". It started the career of the late Alex Trabec (another great Canadian). It pitted teams of students from different secondary schools against each other.
THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES ))) watch dr. Tongues 3D house of horrors ))))))))))))))))))
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! )))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
watch "uncle buck " LOL…. summer rental )))))))… WAGONS EAST ))))))))))))))))))))))))
S CTV– CRAZY LEGS !!!!!!!!!!!!!1)
Hi Q is a game played on a grid. There are holes in a cross shape, each containing a peg. You jump peg over peg. To win, you must end up with one peg left, in the centre. Sort of an early Rubik’s Cube idea.
Martin Scorsese DID film an SCTV reunion called An Afternoon with SCTV. It was supposed to air on Netflix, but has been perpetually delayed for mysterious reasons like 'Scorsese's other commitments'. OOPS, someone already mentioned this.
I highly recommend SCTV's Fantasy Island spoof
Margaret throwing her little stuffed seal at Alex is the cherry on top.
Are you Okay?
We had a show called “reach for the top” and most schools had a RFTT team who competed against all the schools in town. It was very competitive.
I've heard there was a house in Toronto where they all lived. Included in the mass was 'The Kids in the Hall', and a batch from 'Saturday Night Live'. Gilda Radner lived there full-time while SO SO many lived there part-time….couch-surfing. Gene Wilder was often there because of his girlfriend. John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Loren Michaels, Harold Ramis, Jane Curtain, Martin Short, Eugene Levy, Andrea Martin, Dave Thomas ….. all regulars. I've heard Steve Martin dropped in when in town. IMAGINE that place! Apparently, they all praise the neighbour Lady for being the 'House Mom' to them all.
I remember that episode. SCTV never failed to entertain.
Been over a week since you've posted a video, are you doing okay?
Love your videos! Best wishes from Ontario, Canada !
Another hugely popular American tv series was Bonanza. Two of the lead actors, Lorne Greene and Dan Blocker were Canadian.
still laugh until I cry with such comic genius's……thank you for this
Great vid Mert. Luv your content. From Northern Alberta Canada
22 Minutes channel just put out a clip about sledding restrictions on hills in Toronto. It's hilarious. I'll post the link as a response, just in case YouTube doesn't allow the link.
The cast of SCTV are best friends in real life and see each other all the time.
One of my all-time childhood favourites!
……⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️….
You mentioned a reunion.. there actually has been an SCTV special already filmed but was apparently not released due to Covid.. I'm not sure when the release date is – it's been a few years now since it was completed but never aired.
Ahh love the SCTV….
Grew up watching SCTV and it holds up well.
Reach for the Top still exists locally, provincially and nationally, just not on TV for a long time. https://youtube.com/@ReachForTheTop?si=aozR_Kfm09ZY6tKW
Classic. Great acting by all. They are much beloved in Canada!!
Reach For The Top, definitely. They were the age group who would have watched the show.
You need to watch the Movie Canadian Bacon
I am not sure if you are aware of the big picture with SCTV. the show is run as if it was a network in the fictitious town of Melonville. Guy Caballero (Joe Flaherty) is the President and owner. Guy frequently appeared on the network to introduce shows, to make announcements, or to apologize for previous programming blunders. Behind the scenes, Guy was ever on the lookout for cheap, popular programming, and he had no qualms about running shows that pandered to the audience, or were low-quality knockoffs of other, more popular TV series.
HI Mert – I would love for to watch more of Rick Mercer. As part of the "Mercer Report" he had a lot of great videos on places he would visit like the RCMP Training Camp, The Royal Canadian Mint (where they make our money), a training school for truckers…they are so good! Here's the one when he visited the RCMP – you love it!!!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bYT4NLauvKg
Pretty clear where SNL got their idea from.
Each of the actors had returning characters that kept the show going… Johnny LaRue, Bobby Bittman, Lola Heatherton, Bill Needle. Edith Prickley, Moe Green, Count Floyd, Ed Grimley, Bob, Doug and many more. ALL worth checking out!
You need to watch the giants of Polka – the Happy Wanderers who are Stan and Josh (Yosh) Shmenge. John Candy plays the Clarinet and Eugene Levy plays Accordion. They're from fictional Luitonia, which is on the dark side of the Balkans.
A TV special 'An Afternoon with SCTV' was filmed in Toronto in 2018 with Martin Scorsese directing. It was suppose to be released by Netflix and one of our Canadian channels. It was never released. Netflix has said it was 'delayed' not 'shelved'. And we wait ….
take off from jeopardy
Always enjoy your comments. Almost every day, I am catching up on your previous shows. As a big fan of SCTV, you are showing episodes I haven't seen before
Thanks for your work.
If you want to see Eugene and Catherine together again, they've done several movies with Christopher Guest. Waiting For Guffman, Best In Show, or A Mighty Wind all feature both of them prominently.
'Reach For The Top' was started in Burnaby, BC in 1961 and went national in 1965 and ran into the early 80's. I remember watching it in the 1970's. Trebek hosted in the late 60's.
Have you watched Bob and Doug McKenzie yet? Beauty, eh
The real show was called Reach for the Top was very good.
I loved SCTV! You may also enjoy some of the skits from "This Hour Has 22 Minutes", earlier series from 1996 thru 2000 when Rick Mercer was a weekly star on the show
Yeah, full reunion would be something! lol! Catherine O'Hara and Eugene Levy have done quite a lot together though… most recently (I think) Schittz Creek. If you haven't seen that, I'd HIGHLY recommend!!
