was the voice of comedy in the 80s and
9s starring in Classics like Honey I
Shrunk the Kids even stars like Ryan
Reynolds and Chris Evans call him a
comedy Legend but something happened
that made him step away from the
spotlight and we all ask are we ever
going to see Rick again guess what he’s
back and his life today will leave you
speechless early life Rick Moranis was
born on April 18th 1953 in Toronto
Canada where he grew up in a loving
Jewish household with his parents his
mother is of Polish Jewish descent and
his paternal grandparents Jacob and Lena
Moranis were Russian Jewish immigrants
who initially settled in Philadelphia
before moving to Canada raised in a big
neighborhood Rick was exposed to various
cultures music and Lifestyles which
shaped his unique sense of humor and
life perspective from a young age Rick’s
parents encouraged his interest in
comedy his father entertained him with
funny Tales of Comedy Legends like
Jackie gleon and Sid Caesar which
instill in him a deep love for humor but
that’s not all his mother was his
earliest supporter she found his small
jokes interesting and always encouraged
his comedic aspirations from a young age
Rick found solace in making others laugh
he often used humor to lift his spirits
when he was feeling down Rick was also
very good at making quick jokes and he
usually got his ideas from the
interesting people in his neighborhood
his participation in local theater
further enhanced his comedic talents
allowing him to discover his true
passion ladies and gentlemen Rick moranz
[Music] Rick attended sir Sanford Fleming
secondary school where he crossed paths
with Getty Lee who later found Fame as a
renowned musician in a recent interview
with AV club Getty reflected on their
shared history saying Rick Moranis and I
went to school together when we were
really little for about 6 years in a row
we were in the same class he also
mentioned how their childhood Bond
resurfaced later in life when he teamed
up with Rick and Dave for the Bob and
Doug McKenzie show gettting lent his
vocals to their iconic single takeoff
and shared how it all came about saying
they wanted to do this sort of Pop Song
and they naturally thought of me which
was nice it’s cool how those childhood
connections can come back around later
in life isn’t it in a different
interview Rick Moranis was asked about
his childhood friend Getty Lee and
here’s what he said Getty Lee and I went
to the same grade school he moved away
when we were still young but I remember
him like I do all my friends from back
then when asked about the reunion and
teaming up with Getty Lee on the show
for Bob and Doug McKenzie he said when
we had Getty sing the vocal lead for the
first single that was the first time I
had seen him since we were kids and the
first time he had an enormous success
Rick went on to mention how he had
encountered Getty a couple of times
after that and each time he had
acknowledged the success of their single
in Rick’s words I’ve seen him
subsequently a number of times and he
always says that’s the only number one
record I’ve ever had back in school both
Rick and Getty shared a passion for
performance eagerly trying out different
roles Rick’s active involvement in the
drama club earned him admiration and
Applause and this kindled his desire to
pursue a career in entertainment After
High School Rick pursued an arts degree
at York University but even while
studying he couldn’t stop doing what he
loved in an interview with IGN film
Force Rick revealed that he was earning
$5 an hour while nearing completion of
his General arts degree at York
University he held a job at a rock
station at the time despite the workload
Rick expressed confidence in his ability
to manage both work and studies he said
I knew how to do it and I knew I could
get homework and reading done while it
was going on Career beginnings and rise
to fame Rick began his career in radio
as an operator at a middle of the road
station in high school earning $3 an
hour in one interview he said I started
in radio and I started as an operator
spinning records and adding commercials
and keeping the log and all that kind of
stuff and then they stuck me on the air
eventually he worked at chfi and chfi FM
in Toronto eventually moving to Chum a
rock station at Chum he worked as an
operator and occasionally wrote content
for the announcers and he began hosting
the all night show any any time he was
on air Rick didn’t just play music on
the radio he also made people laugh with
his funny jokes his special voice and
funny style made a lot of people like
him and he became very popular on the
radio because of it he recalls a
memorable experience where a listener
requested Stairway to Heaven the person
had the song already playing but
admitted that he wanted to hear it on
the radio rather than playing it himself
Rick said I figured that the real reason
he didn’t want to listen to it off his
album at home was he was afraid of
missing it on the radio every time after
some time in public radio at the CBC
Rick turned to commercial radio and
worked at an FM station in the afternoon
slot throughout his career Rick worked
in various formats including middle of
the road classical and rock he notes
that the transition from am to FM radio
was a significant shift in the industry
with FM becoming the popular format
Rick’s experiences in radio ultimately
prepared him for his future endeavors in
stand-up comedy and writing while making
waves in radio Rick also started doing
stand-up comedy at various clubs and
venues across Toronto I was thinking
about underrated vegetable
like
beats
beats
beats
beats
beats beats me it was during this time
that he crossed paths with fellow
comedian Dave Thomas and their
collaboration became a stepping stone
for him to elevate his career their
comedic chemistry grew strong setting
the stage for future collaborations that
would become legendary Rick’s comedic
skill and acting talents started to earn
him global recognition with Awards and
nominations pouring in in 1976 he had
his breakthrough moment on the iconic TV
show Second City television SCV and it
sealed his status as a comedy star Rick
wasn’t a member of the Second City troop
but his talent earned him a role on the
show recommended by Dave Thomas he
became the only cast member who was
actually not part of the Second City
Comedy troop throughout the series Rick
showcased his flexibility and comedic
genius by portraying memorable
characters like the crazy DJ Jerry Todd
and the flashy secretary guy cabalero
meanwhile streaming platforms never
stopped buzzing with updates and
comments about the show SCTV ran from
1976 to 1981 with the first episode
airing on September 21st 1976 and a
total of 78 episodes produced it
received 15 Emmy nominations often with
many episodes competing against each
other the episode Moral Majority won an
Emmy Award in 1982 for writing for a
variety or music program followed by
sweeps week winning the same award in
1983 in a Grand honor SCV was inducted
into Canada’s Walk of Fame in 2002
throughout the years devoted fans have
kept the platforms busy by consistently
providing fresh reviews recently on IMDb
a user showered Praise on Rick Moranis
proclaiming I love Rick Moranis he is
superb with so much confidence they
crowned SCV as the funniest show of all
time but the accolades didn’t end at
that even in the present day audiences
still find the show extremely funny
another user added this was a very funny
show and still is yet it was Rick’s
collaboration with Dave Thomas on the
great white North comedy album in 1981
that permanently created a place for him
in comedy history but what do we know
about Bob and Doug McKenzie from Great
White North Bob and Doug are characters
played by actors Rick Moranis and Dave
Thomas they were created to make fun of
Canadian TV rules but ended up being
very popular in Canada and the United
States Bob and Doug are two brothers who
aren’t smart and like drinking beer they
often wear warm winter clothes like big
coats and hats and they use Canadian
slang like a and hoser to joke around
with each other they talk about
different parts of can Canadian life and
culture in a funny way on March 24th
2020 a statue of Bob and Doug McKenzie
was unveiled in Edmonton Alberta where
the TV show was filmed in the early
1980s the statue shows the two brothers
sitting on a bench having a beer
together and was erected near the Rogers
Place Arena what better way to honor the
much-loved characters and their role in
Canadian pop culture great white North
was released in 1981 by Anthem records
in Canada and distributed in the United
States by Mercury records the album
achieved remarkable success with over 1
Mill ion copies sold in North America
and 350,000 in Canada alone this
outstanding performance led to a triple
platinum certification by the Canadian
recording industry Association upon its
debut on December 12th 1981 great white
North entered the RPM Canadian album
charts at an impressive number three
position it swiftly ascended to the top
spot the following week maintaining its
rain until January 23rd 1982 RPM
recognized its impact by ranking it at
number 40 among albums released in
Canada in
1,981 but that was not all in 1982 The
Comedy album was announced as number
eight on the prestigious American
billboard 200 album chart remember the
iconic track takeoff by Getty Lee we
discussed earlier well it made waves
hitting its peak at number 16 on the
Billboard 100 singles chart in March
1982 takeoff surpassed Russia’s
acclaimed us hit New World Man by five
spots even though it was released a year
later takeoff also secured the 14th
position on the cashbox chart and Rose
to number five on W LS am in Chicago
notably it dominated Canada’s Chum
charts reigning as number one for two
consecutive weeks so now we know why
Getty always tells Rick that’s the only
number one record I’ve ever had and of
course great white North received Awards
and nominations in 1982 it won the Juno
award for comedy album of the year and
the following year it was nominated for
the Grammy award for best comedy album
the popularity of the album pushed Rick
into the spotlight opening doors to many
opportunities in both television and
film he received his first award in 1982
as the winner of the prime time Emmy for
Outstanding writing in a variety or
music program Rick and Dave had
captivated audiences on a global level
and their fan base wanted a sequel in
1983 Rick and Dave brought Bob and Doug
McKenzie to the big screen with Strange
Brew this time the show was about
Canada’s most famous hosers Bob and Doug
McKenzie who secure jobs at the Elenor
Brewery only to discover that something
is wrong with its operations and as
you’d expect the movie was a commercial
success grossing $8.5 million at the box
office on a 4 million budget it also
rates well with a 76% approval rating on
Rotten Tomatoes and an average rating of
six 7010 on IMDb reviews from viewers
were also filled with funny comments
Janet Maslin wrote in her review for the
New York Times anyone who’s partial to
the McKenzie’s humor doubtless has a
fondness for beer Strange Brew received
the special winner golden reel award in
1984 in 2023 it ranked as one of the 23
best Canadian comedy films ever made
which led to an award from Barry Hertz
of the Globe and Mail after Strange Brew
fans continued to request for another
sequel however none was released but
what could possibly have happened in a
2012 interview with IGN Dave Thomas
revealed that he and Rick had written
the script for a Strange Brew sequel
titled home brew but there was no
financing Dave said unfortunately the
financing for the movie fell through
shortly before filming was set to begin
he further stated I financed most of the
pre-production and ended up losing
$750,000 not only did I not get paid I
lost money on that one in 198 4 Rick
portrayed lisis Tully in the hit movie
Ghostbusters which is the most
successful of all the films in which he
has starred you think it’s too warm in
here for the Brie Louis I’m going home
well don’t leave yet listen maybe if we
start dancing other people will join
in oh don’t move I just got to get the
door Ghostbusters was awarded two Oscars
and won eight Awards out of nine
nominations the movie follows three
parapsychologists who lose their
University funding and decide to start a
special ghost removal service in New
York City the film was praised for its
mix of comedy action and horror and
Rick’s performance was also widely
praised it made
$82. million in its initial release
becoming the second highest grossing
film of 1984 in the US and Canada and
the highest grossing comedy at the time
it stayed at number one for 7 weeks and
was one of the four films to gross over
$100 million that year in addition the
iconic theme song Ghostbusters by Ray
Parker Jr reached number one on the
music charts after additional theatrical
releases the film’s total earnings grew
to approximately $
2952 million making it one of the most
successful comedies of the80s in
recognition of its cultural significance
the Library of Congress added
Ghostbusters to the National film
registry in 2015 5 years later Rick
returned as Lewis Tully in Ghostbusters
2 however the sequel was not as
successful and plans for another sequel
was stopped in 2014 after a cast member
passed away in 1987 Rick portrayed Dark
Helmet in the Sci-Fi Adventure movie
Space Balls Dark Helmet is a silly
villain with a big helmet making fun of
Darth Vader from the movie Star Wars in
interviews Rick would often joke about
his role as Dark Helmet anytime he talks
of Space Balls in one interview with The
Hollywood Reporter Rick mentioned that
the headgear worn for Dark Helmet during
production was way bigger than what was
shown Rick said in the original script
the description of the character was
that the whole costume was one gigantic
helmet then it got scaled back to just
an exaggerated version of the Darth
Vader helmet I can’t breathe in this
thing he also revealed that one of space
Ball’s best jokes was actually
improvised Rick said the scene where
Dark Helmet plays with an erotic doll
your helmet is so big was not in the
script and he came up with it on the
spot he recalls not feeling well that
day possibly with a fever but still
managed to improvise the line he also
Praises George’s performance in the
scene saying his performance makes the
movie George Wier starred as Colonel
Sanders in space balls and was Rick’s
fellow Commander Rick explained that
George’s intensity allowed him to be
better in his performance while wearing
the distinctive outfit Rick also
revealed that the famous line I’m
surrounded by was considered
radical for a pg-rated film at the time
the movie Space Balls had a budget of
$22.7 million and grossed a box office
of $ 38
m119
483 in the United States on its opening
weekend alone an estimated amount of
6,613
837 was realized Space Balls won the
award for worst picture at the 1987
stinker’s bad movie awards despite
receiving negative reviews from many
critics the movie currently holds a
rating of seven 1110th on IMDb how you
ask well it appears it was a huge hit
among fans who enjoyed its humorous take
on science fiction and the Star Wars
franchise in 1989 Rick portrayed Wayne
seninsky in the family comedy film Honey
I Shrunk the Kids he wasn’t the first
pick to portray Wayne seninsky Chevy
Chase was actually the top choice for
the role the script had been written
with Chase in mind given his popularity
from National Lampoon Vacation
however Chase was already committed to
filming National Lampoon’s Christmas
Vacation and couldn’t take on the part
as a result the role of Wayne seninsky
ultimately went to Rick Moranis Wayne
seninsky is a memorable character and
one of Rick’s most notable roles
sininsky is a crazy scientist who
invents a shrinking machine that has a
tendency to malfunction causing it to
blow things up instead of shrinking them
are you trying to tell
me you did
it it works the machine works do the
kids know well yeah the kids know that’s
great it’s not that great why I Shrunk
the Kids what and the Thompson kids too
they’re about this big they’re in the
backyard the film was a surprise box
office hit grossing $222 million
worldwide equivalent to $
545.424 it held the record for the
highest grossing live-action Disney film
for 5 years and ranked seventh in
worldwide box office sales for 1989
Honey I Shrunk The kids received two
Awards and 10 nominations including a
prestigious bafta award the success of
the film led to the production of two
sequels starting with Honey I Blew Up
the Kid in 1992 as well as a television
series and various Theme Park
attractions during its theatrical run an
animated short film titled tummy trouble
featuring Roger Rabbit was also shown in
cinemas throughout the 1980s and 1990s
Rick continued to impress audiences with
his great performances in several
successful movies he seamlessly
transitioned between roles and genres
Rick was honored with his second award
in 1990 for his standout performance in
Parenthood the movie received four
Awards and 14 nominations including two
Oscar nominations thanks to its success
and popularity Rick received the
American Comedy Award for funniest
supporting actor in AEM motion picture
today Rick’s rise to fame has been
globally celebrated by his collection of
three Awards and five nominations
personal life and stepping back from
Hollywood Rick Moranis has experienced
both happy and sad sad times in his life
and these experiences have shaped his
decisions and priorities in ways that
extend far beyond his acting roles in
1986 Rick married Anne bsky a costume
designer and together they built a
family welcoming two children into their
lives a son and a daughter their family
life was filled with happiness yet they
faced challenges along the way sadly
Anne fell ill with breast cancer a
battle she fought courageously But
ultimately yielded to in February 1991
the loss of his wife completely changed
his life forcing him to make a crucial
decision between his career and the
well-being of his children in a rare and
commendable Choice Rick chose to
prioritize his family above everything
else I took a break which turned into a
longer break he told The Hollywood
Reporter stuff happens to people all the
time and people make adjustments change
careers move to another city really
that’s all I did in this world where
Fame and Fortune take priority his
decision to put his children first stood
as a testament to his great values and
character Rick had to take care of his
kids all by himself which was a
difficult task that tested his strength
in many ways he has openly discussed the
numerous challenges he faced from the
struggle to balance work and parenting
responsibilities to coping with the
emotional trauma of losing his wife I
was working with really interesting
people wonderful people he said then I
went from that to being at home with a
couple of little kids which is a very
different lifestyle but it was important
to me in interviews He has expressed
contentment with his decision to step
away from the entertainment industry
reflecting on his experience he
emphasized that his choice was clear and
without a doubt he speaks openly about
the joy he found in being present for
his children as they grew up saying that
his break was driven by love rather than
disappointment I have absolutely no
regrets whatsoever my life is wonderful
he said despite the prospects of
Hollywood he said he was compelled to
provide his children with a stable and
nurturing environment Rick Moranis
decision to prioritize his family over
his career was widely applauded by fans
and critics alike on Reddit one fan
summed up the admiration for his choice
saying here’s why I love Rick Moranis he
made some of my fav movies like
Ghostbusters Little Shop of Horrors and
Streets of Fire the fan then went on to
praise Rick’s dedication to his family
adding the guy was living many people’s
dream but when his family needed him he
was there Rick’s transition away from
onscreen appearances was a gradual
process rather than a deliberate
decision it wasn’t a formal decision he
said he began by turning down a film
project that would have required him to
be away from home during the school year
and instead focused on other creative
Pursuits he maintained a successful
career in writing and Voice work
including voicing the character of rut
in Disney’s 2003 animated film
brotherbear which gross 250 million
dollar worldwide I was fortunate to be
able to continue to make a living
writing and doing voice work in
Manhattan he said in 2005 he released a
comedic music album called the
agoraphobic Cowboy which earned a Grammy
nomination for best comedy album the
following year he also lent his voice to
the sequel Brother Bear 2 which was
released in 2006 additionally he
released another Comedy album my
mother’s brisket in 2013 and wrote funny
op-eds for the New York Times many fans
and media Outlets are eagerly seeking
updates on his well-being and that of
his children as a result questions about
his life and family have become a
recurring Topic in the media when Rick
goes out of his apartment people in New
York often recognize him on the street
fans usually approach him to share how
much they love his work and ask why
movies like the ones he used to star in
aren’t made anymore Rick thinks their
interest in old movies comes from a
different time in film making which had
specific standards and tasteful limits
he says people are very nice when they
see me they ask why don’t they make
movies like they used to I think they
miss a time when movies didn’t use bad
language silly jokes and offensive
content on October 1st 2020 Rick was
walking along West 70th Street in New
York City when someone assaulted him he
sustained minor injuries to his head
back and hip the incident was reported
to the New York Police Department NYPD
which released security footage of the
attack but before that the NYPD offered
$2,500 reward for information leading to
the suspect’s arrest month later on
November 14th Marquis Ventura was
arrested in New York City according to
the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office
Ventura admitted to attacking Rick on
Central Park West in October 2020 and
was given a 2-year sentence fans were
both shocked and Furious by the attack
including Marvel star Chris Evans who
tweeted saying my blood is boiling find
this man you don’t touch Rick Moranis in
response to the news of the attack Ryan
Reynolds also tweeted saying should have
known not to subject Rick to the year
2020 glad to hear he’s okay a
spokesperson for Rick Moranis later
informed the public about his health
stating he is fine but grateful for
everyone’s thoughts and well- wishes
after nearly two decades away from the
spotlight Rick has begun to make his
return to acting much to the excitement
of fans and Industry insiders alike
return to acting and recent projects in
recent years Rick has started to get
back into acting as his children have
become more independent one of the early
signs of Rick’s return came in 2013 with
the release of my mother’s brisket and
other love songs the album was inspired
by his return to his Jewish faith and
culture after being involved in secular
show business for a long time he started
writing songs that reflected this New
Perspective without the stress of
worrying about being too Jewish that he
had in his earlier career he said this
time because I was essentially going to
make this record on my own I could just
say the hell with it he also shared that
he wanted to share his work with his
mother while she was still alive he told
her there’s a big Revenge component in
here and this is no good to me after
you’re dead I’ve got to get this out
there while you’re still alive in 2015
Rick turned down an invitation for a
cameo appearance in the Ghostbusters
reboot the production of Paul Fig’s
Ghostbusters reboot led to announcements
of Cameo appearances by several cast
members from the original 1984 film and
its 1989 sequel multiple cast members
including Dan acoy Bill Murray Ernie
Hudson Sigourney Weaver and Annie Potts
were confirmed to appear in the new film
however there was no mention of Rick
Moranis and this sparked a reaction
across social media Platforms in
response Rick gave a rare Interview With
The Hollywood Reporter in which he
confirmed that the production team had
indeed approached him but he ultimately
declined their offer he said I wish them
well I hope it’s terrific but it just
makes no sense to me why would I do just
one day of shooting on something I did
30 years ago he also explained that he
wasn’t interested in revisiting past
roles without a compelling reason
however he stated that he was ready to
take on a role if he found the right
project when speaking to The Hollywood
Reporter he said I still get the
occasional query about a film or
television role and as soon as one comes
along that Peaks my interest I’ll
probably do it but Ghostbusters didn’t
appeal to me in 2018 Rick had a big
moment when he played Dark Helmet again
on the TV show The Goldbergs although he
played a voice role it represents a
major sign that Rick has returned to the
entertainment industry considering his
last onscreen appearance was in 2007
Adam Goldberg creator of the Goldbergs
is a huge fan of Rick Mor’s work
particularly his role as dark helmet in
the 1987 comedy film Space Balls he told
screen Crush I truly think Rick Moranis
gave the most underrated and Brilliant
comedic performance in any 80s movie as
Dark Helmet Goldberg always wanted Rick
to revisit the role on his show and is
thrilled to have finally made it happen
he further stated as an added bonus
maybe this even gets Space Balls back in
the conversation and I can get my dream
of helping make a sequel in 2020 Rick
appeared in a funny commercial for mint
mobile with Ryan Reynolds Reynolds
dropped the ad online on his Twitter
account he said in his caption at
mintmobile is launching unlimited for
just $30 and bringing back Rick Moranis
the commercial joked about Rick being
away from the public eye for a long time
and this made fans happy and excited to
see him again to introduce it we brought
in an actor we’ve all gone too long
without Rick Moranis so what do you want
me to do you want me to say just a huge
fan the biggest confirmation of Rick’s
return to acting came with the
announcement of his role in a new film
titled Shrunk the movie is a remake of
The Beloved Disney classic Honey I
Shrunk the Kids with Rick playing Wayne
Selinsky again Josh Gad takes on the
role of solinsky’s son previously played
by Robert Oliver in the 1989 and 1992
films in 2020 Josh Gad shared his
excitement on Twitter about Rick Moranis
joining the project he wrote to say it
is a dream come true to once again see
hash Rick Moranis on the big screen is
the understatement of the decade Gad
further stated that witnessing Rick’s
return to one of his most iconic roles
is an incredible honor welcome back hero
