The 67-year-old actor was walking steps from his apartment building around 7:30 a.m. when a stranger suddenly slugged him with a closed fist, knocking him to the ground, the surveillance clip shows.
His attacker was wearing an I (heart) New York hoodie.
The NYPD on Friday confirmed to CBS New York that Moranis was the victim. They called the assault random and unprovoked. Moranis took himself to a local hospital for evaluation, suffering pain in his head, back and right hip. He then reported the incident to police at the 20th Precinct.
“He is fine but grateful for everyone’s thoughts and well wishes,” his rep told The Hollywood Reporter. The suspect, who strolled away from the scene on Central Park West, near West 70th Street, was still at large Friday morning. A reward of up to $2,500 is being offered for information, according to NYPD Crime Stoppers.
Moranis recently appeared in a commercial with fellow Canadian Ryan Reynolds for Mint Mobile. The star left Hollywood after the 1991 death of his wife to focus on raising his two children.
