Rough Trade Interview
Witness the YouTube video “Rough Trade Interview” and also our collection of related clips featuring the well known comedic characters of the McKenzie brothers.
Bob and Doug McKenzie in Rough Trade Interview
In the video Rough Trade Interview, Bob and Doug McKenzie are two of hilarious Canadian comedians who hosted “Great White North”, a ad lib skit which was included on second city television for the show’s 3rd season when it aired by CBC Television in the 1980s. Bob’s character is brought to life by comic Rick Moranis and Doug’s character is acted by comic Dave Thomas. Although born originally as fluff to both please and makes jokes about silly Canadian content guidelines, the brothers transformed into a pop culture phenomenon in both Canada and the US. The characters later became the focus of a huge comedy album, The Great White North, in 1981.
Pre-teen World interviews Rough Trade.
This is an SCTV clip from the early 80’s. Rough Trade had a major hit with the song “Highschool Confidential” at the time, and here they are being interviewed by the kids on Pre-teen World.
I love the part where Eugene Levy can barely hold in his laughter, enjoying the stupidity of it all with John Candy. Amazing performances all around by all cast.
Note this is pre-MuchMusic, pre-MTV.

The sheer talent on that stage in this skit, including the band, was quite something. I wish I'd seen this episode. The Fishin' Musician did turn me on to the Tubes though. (A Tubes fan will see what I did there.) SCTV was a great show.
Hilarious skit!! They don’t even answer Stéphane Seely’s (John Candy) question “…which is gooder?” Eugene Levy…”Do you know Blondie?” LMAO! 🙂
Too bad this doesn't have the RT song. It's an actual recorded performance and not lipsynced to the album track — rare to see on TV in the early '80s. You can ever see the setlist/lyrics/chord changes the keyboardist wrote on a piece of paper and taped to the MiniMoog (and all of the equipment brands are prominent). You don't see this kind of stuff in live television performances anymore.
I remember seeing this about 35 years ago. I was hoping they would show the part where they actually sing "High School Confidential."
Got all excited thinking I was gonna hear the song!! Awesome clip, don't think I saw this one 🙂
John candys nervous character kinda reminds me of chris Farley's nervous character
Highschool Confidential! LOL Well, those pre-teens need to know about lesbian lust sooner or later!
Damn, play the song. 🙁
Brilliant in every way.
I love this! Thank you!
@BeeRich33 – Decent.
My favourite part is just after 1:40 when Eugene Levy quickly moves his head away for fear of totally cracking up, and John Candy is also barely holding in the laughter at the absurdity of the whole thing.
I don't have the follow-up video at this time.
"excellent and decent"
