From _SCTV: Behind the Scenes_ by Dave Thomas, p. 190:
On the same trip [to promote the McKenzie Brothers LP] we did ten television appearances in one day. I was so tired I was dozing on the David Letterman show. Rick sat in the hot seat next to Lettterman. Dave asked Rick how the McKenzie Brothers got started, the question that we had been answering all day—in fact, for the last couple of months—while plugging the album. I had heard it all before and I was tired.
Next thing I know Letterman is asking me something and I snap awake. Rick busted me immediately and said, “Look, he’s asleep. I can’t believe he fell asleep on network TV.”
I said, “Excuse me for not paying attention while you two talked about yourselves.” But, boy, was I embarrassed.

Joe Flaherty was a genious on sctv. Loved his sammy maudlin show and count floyd.
I remember this Kinski/Candy bit so well. Watching this again, I feel like she's actually trying to be funny.
I remember this Christmas in July thing–Jane Pauley came on and gave Dave a yearbook from his high school. I remember Dave saying he'd always wanted to get a Christmas special that was earlier than Andy Williams'.
Wow the line-up Dave announces at about 30:32 for the next night's show is great!
I had that Bob and Doug album–listened to it a lot. A lot!
Love, love, love SCTV. As an Alaskan, Canada is closer to us than the states. I am very surprised to hear at about 19:46 that Canadians also use the term "lower 48." I thought only Alaskans used that term for the states.
Thanks Don
Thanks for putting this together. A lot of great memories.
We had the Christmas Album. Getty Lee made a guest appearance " ten bucks is ten bucks, eh."
Wish you kept the cutaway clips.
Dave Thomas can't believe anyone's ever heard of SCTV.
(My mom interviewed Bob and Doug – said they were hilarious.)
I've worked at the studio where Bob and Doug recorded their album. I'm Celebrity Adjacent.
Great stuff. Would you be willing to upload the unedited versions on TV Vault?
Don Giller… "American Hero". (MFer belongs in the Smithsonian).
Goddamn, I had no idea Catherine O'Hara was so hot when I was a kid.
Dave is a legend
Kinski….
.
So……anybody know the "backstory" on Nastassja Kinski's hairdo (1:40:38) ?? It's just SO over the top it almost seems like it HAD to be a publicity stunt of some kind……maybe not on the level of Joaquin Phoenix's infamous 2009 appearance on Letterman's CBS show, but something DEFINITELY done purposefully to try and make some kind of noise in the press……or somewhere…..
Anybody know if there was ever any 'follow up' on just what might have been going on with her that night (have to say that she DID seem a little bit "squirrely"……though nowhere near as bad as Farrah Fawcett in HER infamous 1997 Letterman appearance), or if Ms. Kinski ever commented on it after the fact ??
.
You're awesome Don Giller, my dad and I loved Letterman!
The Andrea Martin bit started off with lovely awkwardness and then went into very professional weirdness.
Thanks for this entire 12 part series. I appreciate the work sourcing and assembling these clips.
Oh man. Brings back childhood memories for sure. I mostly remember the feature film…. which was great. Take off, eh! It's a beaut!
How great was it when John Candy breaks into William B's sycophantic chuckle as on Sammy Maudlin…what a bundle of kind, hysterical love that man was.
Dave really likes SCTV. I'm glad.
You can tell what a nice man John Candy was. And Dave just loves him as much as any guest.
Poor John. With his weight and I didn’t know he smoked. Sad.
What is Kinski doing here in this collection?
Jfc, it was like interviewing a little kid who just woke up from a nap
Wow – Paul and the band playing "Take Off" going into commercial was a big smile!
these were great comedians.great tv…great days back then..with great days to come…but not now…
Andrea Martin is great in Difficult People, she's dead funny here too
Inclusion of the Tribute to Howard McNear is an example of why this channel is the best thing on YouTube.
Does anyone know where I can watch SCTV full and all episodes, like all seasons all episodes for free. Cause its hard to find, and being a big fan of SNL, watched all the seasons from the start of the 70s til now had alot of fun with it, I would like to see other improv or sketch comedy shows, so just let me know, thanks for the upload, also finished John Candy filmos and tv stuff everything john candy i finished except this sketch show, but hopefully one day i can see it all. its crazy to see john candy smokin back wheen you can smoke in late night and bond movies, john candy had the best and funny parts
You're the greatest! Thanks a lot for sharing these!
The pictures of the Candy/Kinski appearance are so cool. Thanks for including them, Don.
miss this era so much. late night, sctv cast and paul’s band are all so amazing
Truly great stuff..so funny to see how nervous Dave is sitting in "Johnny's chair" early on & watching Dave trying to explain SCTV. Not exactly like being on Sammy Maudlin! SCTV remains the high water mark for TV comedy..Great compilation..thanks DG.
Thanks for everything you do dude. Watching classic Letterman keeps me sane.
This channel is some serious archival effort, man! I'm impressed.
PS but I hate that we don't get to see these clips! 🙂
Thanks don this is awesome!! Great entertainment ! I can drown out the bickering of my HORRIBLE family! I hate .. Love you thanks giller..
