Bob and Doug McKenzie in SCTV | Great White North – Back packing with beer on ski trips
In the video SCTV | Great White North – Back packing with beer on ski trips, Bob and Doug McKenzie are a couple of made up Canadian brothers who are responsible for “Great White North”, a improv which was televised on second city television for the show’s 3rd season when it was broadcast on CBC Television in the year 1980. Bob’s character is played by comedian Rick Moranis and Doug McKenzie is performed by the comedian Dave Thomas. Despite born originally as filler to both please and mock silly Canadian content policies, the brothers morphed into a pop culture sensation in both Canada and the States. The brothers soon became the focus of a bestselling comedy album, The Great White North, in 1981.

Fun fact….According to Dave Thomas, in a interview elsewhere in YT, that these segments of Great White North were actually taped all at once on the Friday nights after most of the SCTV cast and crew went home for the night. The first bits were not scripted – they were improvs. The inclusion of the theme song actually gave them a little more time to come up with the comedy once the director gave them their Que.
