In the video SCTV – HOW THE MIDDLE EAST WAS WON, Bob and Doug McKenzie are a pair of made up Canadian siblings who can been seen in “Great White North”, a improv which was included on second city television for the show’s 3rd season when it was broadcast on the Canadian Broadcasting Channel in 1980. Bob’s character is brought to life by Rick Moranis and Doug McKenzie is played by actor Dave Thomas. Which was brought to life originally as a skit to both fulfill and mock stupid Canadian content statutes, the characters turned into a pop culture smash hit in both Canada and the United States. The brothers later became the focus of a famous comedy album, The Great White North, in 1981.
HOW THE MIDDLE EAST WAS WON: Starring Richard Harris (Dave Thomas) as Gordon of Khartoum, Richard Burton (John Candy) as Sir Richard Berton, Peter O’Toole (Joe Flaherty) as Lawrence of Arabia, Sean Connery (Eugene Levy) as the mufti, and Candice Bergen (Catherine O’Hara), as the kidnapped American woman who loved the mufti.
Also known as Second City TV (1976–1981) – SCTV Network 90 (1981–1983) – SCTV Channel (1983–1984). This classic Canadian sketch comedy launched many careers and went mostly un-noticed by US audiences save for a brief stint on NBC.
