In lieu of the long-delayed Scorsese doc (c’mon, Marty!), here’s a largely unseen piece of SCTV. As part of Second City’s 50th Anniversary weekend, the full cast, minus Rick Moranis, performed two shows and sat for a morning panel. This is that panel with a few clips from the previous evening’s 10pm performance sprinkled in.
Yes the camera angle is not great, but sitting in the front row makes a stealth video a tricky prospect (especially in pre-smartphone 2009). I’m hoping the joy of watching these funny, beautiful people share their SCTV memories up close (ok too close perhaps) will eclipse the cinematic shortcomings.
They discuss performing the previous night, being together again, moving into impressions, the Vikings and Beekeepers fiasco, memories of John Candy, favorite characters and more.

13:50. What Dave Thomas said wasn't really true, at least as the show went on. The Tubes and The Plasmatics were on "The Fishin' Musician" with John Candy but other celebrities like Levon Helm, Roy Orbison, Devo, Ian Thomas, Natalie Cole, The Boomtown Rats, Carl Perkins, John Cougar, etc also appeared. It was always shocking to see such huge stars though because Caballero was such a cheap chiseling bastard.
Thank you for sharing this delightful conversation. Not only do I continue to hope for the SCTV documentary to be eventually released, but for the DVD release of all the remaining episodes.
As a lifelong SCTV fanatic, going back to the Global TV in Toronto beginnings, this is really historical stuff, especially since Harold has left us in the ensuing years. It is deeply disappointing, at best, that a reunion of these immensely talented/influential artists was filmed/posted like it was done in the Bat Cave. Were there no other cameras there, or was this filmed without permission? Truly a shame, given the content and legendary participants.
