We’ve been obsessed with this sketch since the earliest days of Yacht Rock. When we had our dive bar basement Thursday night residency at the 10 High, I would have someone else sing “Ride Like the Wind” so I could squeeze through the crowd, get a drink from the bar, and always barely make it back in time to sing “Such a long way to go…” of course NO ONE got the reference but they all thought it was funny anyway. The joke transcends.

Around the same time very early on, our crowd became obsessed with Peter’s shaker playing. I think we’re probably the only band where the crowd plays air shaker – some air guitar and air bass, but a lot of air sax and air shaker. I think people aren’t used to seeing the lead singer type confident enough to just rock the shaker and nothing else.

I was working on the mix to Tropical Illusion, and it just felt right to CRANK the shaker on the chorus. That got my mind going on how we would perform it live, and out of the breezy corner of my yacht rock brain the SCTV sketch resurfaced. It felt like the perfect way to connect our new single to the lineage of Yacht Rock.
