more info

Another neat EOTF (“end of tape find” that was sadly mostly recorded over), here’s the last minute and a half of another SCTV episode in its original incarnation, this one being “The Man Who Would Be King of the Popes” (S01E25, originally aired in Canada on December 5th 1977), followed by the first two and a half minutes of an edition of The Gong Show (with Chuck Barris as host, and Jaye P. Morgan, Anson Williams and Anne Turkel as panelists).

(previous to this we have found three other complete original broadcasts of SCTV – “Shock Theatre” – “Leave It to Beaver” – and “Lust for Paint” –

Includes:

Final segment of SCTV episode, which includes a few extra seconds of the sketch from when it was re-aired later, and with original closing credits including original production entities and animated Rhodes Productions bumper (with ‘A Filmways Company’ shown at end) which all but disappeared after repackagings years later

Commercials for:

Joe Perillo Pontiac (with “Rocky” motif)

Handi Wipes

Promo for The Mary Tyler Moore Show, coming this fall (voiceover by Ed Grennan)

Animated station ID, with promo for ChicagoFest (voiceover by Ed Grennan)

Gong Show Segment 1, with first act, Dee Cornwell (?) on board (segment of music to which she dances (“I Gotcha” by Joe Tex) was reversed to prevent YouTube blocking)

Commercials for:

Marriott’s Great America amusement park (with voiceover by Ed Grennan)

Secret anti-perspirant (incomplete; recording ends midway)

This aired on local Chicago TV early Sunday, August 6th 1978 during the 12:27am to 12:33am timeframe.

About The Museum of Classic Chicago Television:

The MCCTv (FuzzyMemoriesTV) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit whose primary mission is the preservation and display of off-air, early home videotape recordings (70s to early 80s, mostly) recorded off of TV (in Chicago or other cities now too); things which would likely be lost if not sought out and preserved digitally. If you have any old 1970s videotapes recorded off of TV please email: tapes@fuzzy.tv Even though (mostly) short clips are displayed here, we preserve the entire broadcasts in our archives – the complete programs with breaks (or however much is present on the tape), for historical preservation. For information on how to help in our mission, to donate or lend tapes to be converted to DVD, please e-mail tapes@fuzzy.tv Thank you for your help!

  • "Second City Television" was produced in Canada. This early episode was made at the Global TV studios, on Barber Green Road, in Don Mills, a suburb northeast of Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

The cast were exhausted, because they spent their days writing, rehearsing, and taping the TV series, then rushing downtown to perform at the Second City (at 110 Lombard St.) until midnight. Then, they'd be back at Global the next morning.

Subsequent series of "SCTV" were produced at the WIC TV studios in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada; then at Magder (now Showline) Studios in the Scarborough suburb of Toronto.

  • Milton DeLug nails the opening!
Also...I need more Chuck Barris sunny attitude in my day!
