Probably unrealized by many but there are two fantastic impersonations here. Martin Short is mimicking Brian Linehan , Canadian interviewer based in Toronto.
Wow the pure genious of this sketch . I’m in awe and proud to be Canadian when I see comedy gold like this .
"Jeez, you're unreasonably bitter".
Kids In The Hall did another season… Reunite this team!
James Coco eats too much. Phyllis Diller got her looks back, lol.
LOL… "that's wild.. that's amazing"…LOL
Brilliantly captures what older comic actors of that era were like in interviews. Zero insight, borderline hostile to interviewer, seemingly no sense of humor….
Dave did the best impression of Bob Hope. He's amazing!
The ironic thing about this is that Martin Short was in fact interviewed by Brian Linehan on City Lights back in 1977.
The Best! and SCTV wasn't just about amazing impressions, it's the writing and lines that are so good too.
Still absolutely perfect
Linehan and Hope…doesn't get much better than that.
Holy smokes, this is brilliant. Dave Thomas goes beyond a simple caricature of Hope and captures his odd complexity.
Brilliant
Martin Short plays an ass hole so well and this is the real Bob Hope.
Brilliant!
They knew exactly how to skewer Hollywood which is already a parody of itself.
Of course the spoof isn't just of Bob Hope, but also of Brian Linehan, a well known interviewer on Canadian TV….Short was interviewed by him in 1977 before he came out the "Brock Linehan" character on SCTV….Short really nailed it with the look/hair/outfit and mannerisms of the guy.
Martin Short is Brian Linehan; I can't look at his face in this sketch without bursting into laughter. (And Dave Thomas is a disturbing mixture of Bob Hope and my dad.)
An extraordinarily subtle sophisticated sketch with Thomas’ uncanny impression of Hope, hilarious in its accuracy and absurdity, juxtaposed against Martin Short’s understated Brian Linehan, both a broad caricature and earnest straight man at the same time throughout… Some of SCTV’s most successful avant-garde humor.
Martin Short's Brock Linehan was a funnier faux gossip columnist than Jiminy Glick. Linehan's 70s fuzak theme was perfect.
"I tell ya something – I was out with Crosby's dad EVERY DAY and he never beat me once."
Absolute brilliance.
Gil Gerard as Jesus always killed me, LOL!
This show was head and shoulders above everything when it was on. Maybe SNL briefly matched it for a few seasons in its heyday. Even in all the decades this show has been off little has been aired that can even match this one skit. Bobby Bittman use to kill it on the Sammy Maudlin Show.
Martin Short is a parody inside a parody.
Love SCTV the best sketch phone ever. The best. Group of nut balls on this show
What a great scene, and Bob Hope certainly summed up the French !!!!
LOL !!!
“The funny version of the greatest story ever told.” Good Lord, so to speak.
I can't believe how great Dave Thomas was as Bob Hope!
Dave Thomas didn't make the cinematic "splash" as the usual suspects did but he should always be remembered as a fine mimic and a wonderful complimentary player.
Brian Linehan was notoriously well researched. Without fail, at some point in the interview, the subject would lament, "Wow, you've really done your homework". His cred brought the biggest stars to CityTV,. At first, a dinky little studio (originally a UHF station!), on Queen East and then, the Gothic castle on Queen West, (Humble brag I know the guy that got the truck smashing through the wall deal done).
I didn't work directly with Brian Linehan, but he carried himself around the offices like a true gentleman.
The Brian Linehan impression is spot on by Martin Short. Genius.
I remember the Brock Lianhan skits, I just don't remember them being THIS good!! Hat's off to Dave Thomas, awesome portrayail… So dead pan, just like I imagen Hope would be off camera, always a wise ass… Thanks for posting this (sadly) forgotten gem….
Genius!
Waaaay smarter than Bob Hope was.
wow. this skit is way too long and it goes nowhere. a swing and a miss!
These guys are absolutely brilliant
Bob Hope said the impression of him by Dave Thomas was the best of anyone.
The only thing missing is Bob Hope mentioning his upcoming special on NBC with the Golddiggers and Lola Falana. It seems like he always had something else to plug.
Brock Linehan..lmao. Johnny Carson hated most of all having Hope as a guest. Said he needed a script for everything. No improv skills. Funny to see him parodied doing ridiculous shows on all time great sctv
