Bob and Doug McKenzie in SCTV Sunrise Semester: Gypsy Mythology with Ernest Bruter
In the video SCTV Sunrise Semester: Gypsy Mythology with Ernest Bruter, Bob and Doug McKenzie are two of strange Canadian comedians who are responsible for “Great White North”, a show which was streamed on second city television for the show’s third season when it was featured on CBC Television in the 1980s. Bob’s character is brought to life by comedian Rick Moranis and Doug’s character is performed by the comedian Dave Thomas. Even thoughFamously created originally as an idea to both follow guidelines and make fun of network Canadian content statutes, the two grew up to be a pop culture success in both Canada and the US. The McKenzie brothers became the focus of a classic comedy album, The Great White North, in 1981.
In this segment of Sunrise Semester (Humanities 196) Dr Bruter describes how Gypsies were created.

Didja' notice Ernie (aka 'Brown Shirt') Bruter eschewed tha' local sobriquet of callin'em..pikeys? Of course he ain't in England so why would he, tha' doofuss?
Gypsy mythology is highly underrated.
In the foreground of the opening animation. The man with the dog. Is the man urinating into the stream? No, I must be crazy.
But wait. Is the figure meant to be Ernest Bruter? Played by Eugene Levy? Who went on to do Schitt's Creek?
So if that guy is pissing in the creek . . .
Shit just got meta.
Budget $1.50 an episode – could teach today’s million $ per episodes many lessons…
i need some Mel's rock pile right now
You are so completely wrong. If you want to say they arent funny fine. thats your opinion, but Rick Moranis after SCTV (Ghostbusters 1 & 2, Shrunk the Kids series, numerous other one offs) Martin short (SNL, NUMEROUS films, Jiminy Glick) Ohara (Home Alone 1 & 2, numerous Christopher Guest movies), Flaherty (Freaks and Geeks), Levy (American Pie movies) Candy (far too many movies to name), Thomas ( a few movies and the show Grace Under Fire). They most CERTAINLY did not fall apart.
Is it alright if I go with a TV show and say Freaks and Geeks?
I love SCTV too, but i disagree with you about them not being as funny later. Nothing Catherine Ohara did on SCTV is as funny to me as her walking with the sprained ankle in Best In Show. And Joe Flaherty did some fantastic stuff on Freaks and Geeks.
The Great Outdoors and Cool Runnings.
Splash. Levy and Candy brilliance.
TV parody at it's finest. Nothing captures the state of 1970's local TV as spot-on as SCTV. Makes you yearn for the past.
STRIPES.
Uncle Buck
Great movie. I would add Waiting for Guffman
Best in Show comes to mind right away. I'm sure there are others but oh man I love that movie.
What's your favorite movie starring an SCTV alum?
Well, that will just have to be the question of the day…
Hit and miss I guess.
