  1. watch more and more SCTV and you'll see so so many influences for decades following in TV and movies, it was that good // what's even more telling is that SCTV really didn't have any money, it was done on a shoestring and IMHO that's what brought out their brilliance, they relied on nothing more than their creativity and ingenuity

  2. The kid is a spoof of Damian – the possessed boy in the movie The Omen
"Small Town Dick" – dick is old school slang from the 30s to the 50's approx. for a private detective. calling a detective a dick was NOT an insult back decades ago . Im assuming the word came from the Dick Tracy detective comic series that were printed back then.

John and Eugene Levy had a recurring character sketch called The Schmenge Brothers, who were polish polka players. That was really popular. John even did a thing on Sesame Street as his Schmenge character. You can probably find it on youtube.

  3. Last time I recall watching SCTV was on a New Year’s Eve I was drinking Champaign and I don’t know if it was the drink or the tv show but I laughed so hard I puked foam lol. This show sometimes lol. It gets you in the bones like ocean wind. So good

  4. What they got away with then is fabulous, and I could never keep up with the references even at the time. ( so many ) Brillant and they all became stars after this.
I mean today watching it is seems different and even more wierd, and it was so freaky then, and we had some idea what they were making fun off, and how I laughed and went omg! All SCTV equals brillant. Say it out loud! But like you said, take it for the times it came out , when irreverance and making fun was still okay to all and oneself. Candy Rocked!

  5. I loved SCTV. One of my favourite skits was John Candy as Johnny Larue as a TV exercise host. "Okay people first thing is to go to your refrigerator. Bend over. Pull on the handle. Well that's all for today. You don't want to overdo it. The cast was stellar, the skits were excellent. And most if not all went on to great success. There was one tragedy Tony Rosato unfortunately developed an insanity. Btw this is not a joke. He woke up one morning and believed his wife and children were replaced by imposters.

  6. I was a bit too young when SCTV came out but boy, it was a breeding ground of excellent actors and comedians through the 70s and 80s, many of which jumped directly to Hollywood. They had two "troupes" of Second City prior to the TV show; one was located in Toronto, and the other was Chicago, both of which were the "Second City" (second largest city) in their respective countries at the time. Of course, since then, Toronto has usurped Montreal to become the largest in Canada, and while Chicago was previously #2 behind New York City, it later dropped to be #3 as it was surpassed by Los Angeles.

  7. There is Many Things, That has Disturbed me in Life, as a C.A.F. Medical Member, But, Your Wonderful Channel is Not One of THEM !! ~~ T.Y. Tash, for the laughter Given & ALLOWING US TO LAUGH AT OURSELVES THRU YOUR EYE'S & The Appreciation You Give to Us Canucks !!:))) ~~ You have become a Canadian Treasure !!! ~~ALL THE VERY BEST TO YOU & YOURS…

  8. I’ll also suggest that you check out another long running Canadian show called “The Red Green Show”. It began in my hometown of Hamilton and ended up at the CBC, running for 15 seasons.

  9. SCTV (the television version) was about a fictional television station in a town called Mellonville. The programs they produced were parodies of films and television shows. It began as a Canadian produced show and an offshoot of Toronto’s Second City sketch comedy troupe. It originated in Edmonton on the Global TV Network, was picked up by the CBC, then produced by NBC in the U.S.

  10. This is a spoof of a movie from 1976 called “The Omen” about a child who was born as the anti-christ, the child of the devil. There were two other films, The Omen Part 2 and The Final Conflict with Sam Neil.

  11. This wasn't even close to being the best of John from SCTV. Do yourself a favour & search for "Pepi Longsocks", the Schmenge Brothers, Midnight Cowboy II, Whatever Happened to Baby Ed, John Candy as Babe Ruth….there's just a million more. Man, I loved SCTV growing up in the late 70s/early 80s.

  12. SCTV and the original Saturday Night Live cast are all from the same comedy troupe in Chicago, the Second City Comedy Club. In the early 70s Lorne Michaels wanted to put them all on Saturday Night Live but the Canadian members decided to do their own show, except Dan Akroyd who went to SNL with his bestie John Belushi. All of them from SCTV and SNL are also associated with National Lampoon and have worked together on all kinds of projects from The Blues Brothers, 1941 (Steven Spielberg directed this hidden gem), the Vacation movies starring Chevy Chase (John was the park security at Wally World), Little Shop Of Horrors, Home Alone, The Great Outdoors, Ghostbusters, Nothing But Trouble and a lot more.
