What they got away with then is fabulous, and I could never keep up with the references even at the time. ( so many ) Brillant and they all became stars after this.
I mean today watching it is seems different and even more wierd, and it was so freaky then, and we had some idea what they were making fun off, and how I laughed and went omg! All SCTV equals brillant. Say it out loud! But like you said, take it for the times it came out , when irreverance and making fun was still okay to all and oneself. Candy Rocked!
SCTV and the original Saturday Night Live cast are all from the same comedy troupe in Chicago, the Second City Comedy Club. In the early 70s Lorne Michaels wanted to put them all on Saturday Night Live but the Canadian members decided to do their own show, except Dan Akroyd who went to SNL with his bestie John Belushi. All of them from SCTV and SNL are also associated with National Lampoon and have worked together on all kinds of projects from The Blues Brothers, 1941 (Steven Spielberg directed this hidden gem), the Vacation movies starring Chevy Chase (John was the park security at Wally World), Little Shop Of Horrors, Home Alone, The Great Outdoors, Ghostbusters, Nothing But Trouble and a lot more.
That episode was laced with ridicule.
To get the best feel for SCTV, you're better off to watch whole episodes.

This wasn't even close to being the best of John from SCTV. Do yourself a favour & search for "Pepi Longsocks", the Schmenge Brothers, Midnight Cowboy II, Whatever Happened to Baby Ed, John Candy as Babe Ruth....there's just a million more. Man, I loved SCTV growing up in the late 70s/early 80s.
This is a spoof of a movie from 1976 called “The Omen” about a child who was born as the anti-christ, the child of the devil. There were two other films, The Omen Part 2 and The Final Conflict with Sam Neil.
SCTV (the television version) was about a fictional television station in a town called Mellonville. The programs they produced were parodies of films and television shows. It began as a Canadian produced show and an offshoot of Toronto’s Second City sketch comedy troupe. It originated in Edmonton on the Global TV Network, was picked up by the CBC, then produced by NBC in the U.S.
I’ll also suggest that you check out another long running Canadian show called “The Red Green Show”. It began in my hometown of Hamilton and ended up at the CBC, running for 15 seasons.
The best of SCTv is John Candy and Eugene Levy as the Schmenge Brothers, polka kings. They even had a hilarious appearance on the David Letterman Show.
