Bob and Doug McKenzie in SCTV – The William B. Show
In the video SCTV – The William B. Show, Bob and Doug McKenzie are a pair of imaginaryfunny Canadian actors who were featured in “Great White North”, a improv which was introduced on SCTV for the show’s most liked season when it aired by the Canadian Broadcasting Channel in the 1980s. Bob’s character is played by comedian Rick Moranis and Doug McKenzie’s part is played by Dave Thomas. It was brought to life originally as filler to both follow guidelines and makes jokes about silly Canadian content policies, the characters turned into a pop culture success in both Canada and America. The brothers soon became the focus of a bestselling comedy album, The Great White North, in 1981.
Broadcast 02/18/83. At least Irving Cohen shows up.
From my dilapidated tape collection. And whatever the hell…

And who does Irving Cohen walk like?????????
This was SNL for smart people.
Give me a bouncy C.
I take it William B. was loosely based on Ed McMahon?
William B is better than all the current late night turds bombing on television with their political agendas.
# 1 timeless..
We were watching the night this aired, as was our Friday night custom by this point. NO social event could stop us. The first time we saw this, we roared with unrestrained laughter. The kind where one can't breathe. Forty years later, it still stands as an absolute SCTV classic.
This is one of the few long sketches that's great!
the crew never let the poor bastard go to commercial LOL.
risky entry there wow he really trusted that guy
that deafening silence from the audience with the occasional cough….
Please . . . just once: Can we have Jimminy Glick interview Irving Cohen!?
Imagine a decade where guys could wear those style of glasses, indoors, and be considered stylish and not creepy.
John Candy's little giggle is so infectious. He did it on "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles" as well, and it never failed to make me smile. We sure lost a good one too soon with his passing.
What an uncomfortable skit. Brilliant
Irving Cohen (aka Joe Biden)
LOL this is great!
William B. was definitely one of my favorite John Candy characters. Candy's portrayal of the anxious and awkward William B. with that unique nervous laugh was endearing and brilliant. The interactions between William B., Sammy Maudlin, Bobby Bitman, Skip Bitman, Lola H., Irving C. and others with their gamut of raw emotions were always hilarious and priceless. Thanks for the posting and thank you SCTV!
So much here that is just so perfect. Candy plays William B as EXACTLY what he is here- a second banana with no one to play off of. And Irving Cohen- the songs are funny and all, but what I love is the blunt assessment Irving gives William B of his career choice. He's talking to him as if they were at the Stage Deli- "It's your funeral." So much packed into one sketch.
Genius.
Gimme a C, a bouncy C !
Thanks for posting this. Really. But I found it remarkably unfunny. I dunno, they were all great, but it was more sad than anything to me.
I just think about the movies John Candy could have done, I miss this man. He brought me joy and a deep down laugh that none else could!!!
Wow…
The William B Show, will not be seen again next week
12:13 William B’s shoe is just lying there
Gimme a C Gimme a bouncy C!
Old William allways gets there .
Martin short is ripping on tim Conway's oldest man bit when he walks in. This reminds me Chevy chase tried to be a talk show host and flipped the first time got canceled.
Seeing Irvin Cohen come out on the show was hilarious!! When he slowly buttons his jacket and it stays unbuttoned….and when William B. finally pushes him down into his chair…Priceless!!
Willy B was the man.
William B hit his stride when he was hired as news anchor for CNN. He was the best they had and it was all downhill for that newsroom after he retired.
The William B show will not be seen next week reminds me of the show Turn On where one station came out at about the 15 minute Mark and said the remainder of this program will not be seen
Give me a C a bouncy C
I miss John Candy. One of my all time favorites.
Woahhh is this Eric Andres inspiration?
You know, and I think that I can speak for everyone, the William B. Show is a real Stinker from the very beginning. Sure, McLean Stevenson heaved his share of Doof Bombs, but William B. threw his fair share of Stink Bombs too. You can't blame Eddie Arcaro for running from this Stinking Turd either. Let's just hope that William B. learns to play his Second Banana and can make his way back to the Wonderful Sammy Maudlin Show one day. That's one thing that I think we can all agree on… Sammy Maudlin is The Greatest Entertainer in the World !! And I really mean that too.
I knew a guy just like William b.
I knew a guy just like William b.
The cricket sound, I am 99% certain, is done by Martin Short. He’s shown it off on Conan a couple times.
In the midst of the silliness, the skit also showed real friendship – Sammy Maudlin comes to the set to bail out his pal William B.
Literally the worst talk show in the history of talk shows!
Love the crickets. SCTV was the best sketch comedy ever.
"Where's the drum ro…NOW the drum roll…" LOL!
Eddie Arcaro…. the little bum left
