Bob and Doug McKenzie in SCTV US Season 1 opening
In the video SCTV US Season 1 opening, Bob and Doug McKenzie are a group of odd Canadian brothers who starred in “Great White North”, a sketch which was aired on SCTV – second city television for the show’s third season when it was aired on CBC Television in in the early 80s. Bob is performed by comic Rick Moranis and the character Doug is acted by comic Dave Thomas. Regardless the fact it was made originally as a skit to both satisfy and make fun of annoying Canadian content demands, the characters morphed into a pop culture success in both Canada and the US. The pair soon became the focus of a famous comedy album, The Great White North, in 1981.
This is elsewhere on Youtube, but I’ve uploaded a better quality file that’s actually in sync. This is the original title sequence to the American cut of Second City Television season 1 in 1977 (I think the Canadian one had a different narration).

Dave Thomas will ALWAYS be The Beaver!!!
Thank you for posting this opening. I used to watch SCTV when It came on a half-hour before SNL back in 1978.I always told my friends as school that Monday about the show but they looked at me as if they just auditioned for "Children of the Corn". Only my fellow Monty Python fans saw the show.
I heard the opening music without seeing the video, and immediately expected to see Julius Pierpont Patches, celebrated and beloved Mayor of the Seattle City Dump (RIP).
Do you have the full copy of this show?
This is the opening I remember growing up. Shame it's not incorporated into the full episodes here on YT
Channel 109 was making fun of CITY-TV, channel 79 in Toronto. That was a station that put out a minimum of power and existed to force carriage by cable systems. That they were Second City TV was serendipitous.
Man, that audio quality is every bit as terrible as I remember. Wish they'd put these on DVD and clean that up a bit.
YES! Thank you! What season did they mention the "tiny republic of Togo" and you see a tiny TV being pushed out of a grass hut and into the mud?
This music is reminiscent of Spike Jones
I love the forced little bit of “uncontained” laughter before Harold Ramis’ name. “Ha-Harold Ramis”.
0:39 – Can't resist that slender-stick mic!
Why did they do away with this theme song?
That was an amazing cast, when you think about it. John Candy and Harold Ramis went on to comedy stardom, Catherine O'Hara was in the Home Alone films and all of the other cast members had roles in movies for some time after that.
I thought D. Thomas was the burg…er, Bill Needle, that is.
anything from SCTV is better than what SNL puts on these days.
Yes! Hard to find the original opening to SCTV. Awesome
Thanks, I was hoping someone would find a better copy and this is it.
"And Dave Thomas as the Beaver…" haha good stuff. I wish this was still on TV. I remember staying up and watching this on TV Land. That was almost ten years ago.
Excellent! Thanks for posting this!
