Bob and Doug McKenzie in SCTV’s Joe Flaherty Tribute HD
In the video SCTV’s Joe Flaherty Tribute HD, Bob and Doug McKenzie are a duo of odd Canadian brothers who starred in “Great White North”, a segment which was streamed on SCTV – second city television for the show’s most liked season when it got sold to CBC Television in 1980. Bob is created by the funny Rick Moranis and Doug McKenzie is performed by the comedian Dave Thomas. The bit was born originally as an idea to both satisfy and laugh about non sensical Canadian content laws, the pair turned into a pop culture phenomenon in both Canada and America. The McKenzie siblings later became the focus of a huge comedy album, The Great White North, in 1981.
My music video tribute to the amazing talents of Joe Flaherty during his years on SCTV. Sadly, Joe passed away April 1st, 2024. RIP Mr. Flaherty, you’ll keep ’em rolling in the aisles wherever you are now! 🙂

The most underrated of the SCTV greats, in my opinion. He never failed to make me laugh helplessly.
RIP Joe Flaherty. I liked his character Guy Caballero best. I first seen SCTV 45 years ago, and the show was special back then and watched reruns since. I seen Joe Flaherty on Married With Children as Al Bundy's dentist and that was funny. I was thinking that Joe Flaherty could have been auditioned for Al Bundy, from would have fit that part. Of course Ed O'Neil played that part so well. I was watching that dentist episode recently and was sad to hear Joe Flaherty passed April 1, 2024.
THAT…..was an OUTSTANDING tribute to the great Joe, and the classic days of SCTV.
Well, I guess the good lord took a likin' to Billy Sol and Big Jim. They're now together again, having folks get blowed up real good in the afterlife.
Salvador Dali on Sunrise Semester – whatta character. RIP Joe Flaherty!
Rest in peace to one of the most talented and greatest comedians out there. Joe Flaherty is one of my favourite cast members of SCTV, and I’m very saddened by his passing. Thanks for everything, Joe. You made so many people laugh and smile around the world. ❤️
To make people laugh is to lighten their hearts from the hardships of ordinary life, Joe and all the SCTV gang helped me through my unhappy times of teenage life, like an oasis of joy, I relished every time their show came on tv, all time stopped, I would arrange my studies around their air time. Thanks Joe we all owe you big time I hope God blesses you for all the good you brought into this world. Rest in peace.
The 'Flying Circus' was often too weird for my young brain. SNL was too 'smart' with Chevy and Aykroyd. But SCTV was always oddball funny. Always.
I've always wondered whether his Floyd Robertson character from "SCTV News" was based on Pittsburgh TV news legend Bill Burns (given Flaherty's growing up in Pittsburgh while Burns held court with TV viewers – and both were Irish Catholic). I suppose now, we may never know . . .
Loved Joe Flaherty. Sad news, but provided so many laughs…. Sammy Maudlin was one of the funniest characters in history!
EXCELLENT-!
R.I.P. Joe , thank you for the laughs and smiles ..
