Siskel and Ebert reviews a American comic science fiction film “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids”, starring Rick Moranis, Matt Frewer, Marcia Strassman, Kristine Sutherland, and the others in June 23, 1989. Both of them gave a thumbs down because the writing of the script and the storytelling was not good. Although, the special effects were impressive. Secondly, they also reviews a current released of a 7 min. colored cartoon “Tummy Trouble” featured Roger Rabbit and Baby Herman from Robert Zemeckis’ 1988 film, “Who Framed Roger Rabbit”. Both enjoyed it instead. However, I really have to disagree with Gene and Roger because I found it to be entertaining and fun, as I enjoyed it a lot as a kid. Sorry, Gene and Roger, but you’re being too hard on it. Thumbs up for me on “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids”.

Transcript:
coming up next the suburban sciences
experiment goes wrong and Honey I Shrunk
the Kids the machine works did the kids
know well yeah the kids know max Moby is
named Honey I Shrunk the Kids and it
tells the story of a suburban scientist
played by Rick Moranis who invents a new
machine that would be able to shrink
things down to microscopic size if only
he could get it to work one day a
neighborhood kid hits a baseball through
the window and it bounces off the
machine it deflects the laser beam
somehow and suddenly the invention works
all too well
shrinking both of Moranis kids and two
neighbor kids until they’re smaller than
an ant they’re almost invisible and they
get thrown out with the garbage
[Music] so an ordinary backyard turns into a
jungle for them and life is terrifying
when a bee takes two of the kids on a
wild ride
[Music] [Music] one of the movies best sight-gags is
when Moranis almost eats his own son for
breakfast
[Music] to keep our eyes as you could see from
those clips the special effects in this
movie are really well done the movie
essentially takes us to the same world
as such films as The Incredible
Shrinking man which came out of 1957 and
so you can see that movie special
effects have made a lot of progress
since then this movie demonstrates that
the blades of grass look like palm trees
there’s a friendly app that looks
amazingly realistic and so forth
unfortunately the movie storytelling
ability is not equal in the special
effects for me this is the same problem
as with Batman there’s not much of a
sense of fun and Honey I Shrunk the kids
not enough silliness and wild
imagination and when they do get a good
idea like having Moranis to spend
himself above the back yard to circle
around looking for the kids they let it
run on so long we get tired of it honey
i shrunk the kids looks good but it’s a
disappointment I don’t even know if it
looks good for me it came out of that
old white bread environment of the old
Disney live-action films which I thought
was quite boring and I started to see it
come back and this way the people didn’t
seem to me to be very bright for kids I
mean I would have thought that they if
they had been placed in this actual
situation that the dialogue between the
kids would have been a lot sharper and
smarter for example they’re mowing are
the kids are now real tiny right there
in the grass they’re mowing the lawn all
right now they’re running away from the
lawnmower well once the lawnmower passes
you it would seem logical to me then you
say hey look the grass is cut let’s go
there now and we can walk more quickly
across there isn’t that kind of
interchange kids are that you know are
you’re right gene and on a larger level
they don’t have any master plan like
here we are what can we do right I mean
yeah once they’re in the grass they just
walk around and adventures happen to
them so that they’re not trying to
figure out what they could do to save
themselves and and and kids in the
audience for whom this film is intended
I’m not just saying this as an adult I’m
saying kids are that shocked they will
be figuring out what they would do in
that situation this thing needed to be
written with a much brighter cast of
characters I think you’re right one more
thing we ought to mention is that in its
current release around the country Honey
I Shrunk the Kids is being accompanied
by a color cartoon named tummy trouble
now that shouldn’t be news in the old
days there was always a cartoon before
the feature but that was back before
greed took over and they wanted to
want to let you have that extra six
minutes you know get you out there and
sell you some more popcorn and get you
in again nothing that you haven’t
actually paid for it could possibly be
shown to you tummy trouble is a return
engagement for last summer’s animated
hero Roger Rabbit who once again is
assigned to babysit for baby Herman and
panics when the little toddler squall as
a rattle the trip to the hospital turns
into a nightmare but the cartoon is
basically just a retread of the Roger
Rabbit cartoon which opened Who Framed
Roger Rabbit it’s fun I was glad to see
it but it’s not worth the trip all by
itself well no I wouldn’t pay a full
admission to see a seven-minute cartoon
but that isn’t an indictment of the
cartoon as much as there’s a physical
fact that it’s only 7 minutes long I I
enjoyed it I wish there were more of
them the amount of attention that we
have to spend on it is dictated by the
fact that it is unusual to have a single
cartoon there I loved it I’d like to see
it again I love the one he goes racing
through the hospital wings and the door
start flapping open it just recalled
what I loved about cartoons in the first
place gene I just got a news release as
they’re gonna make some new Tom and
Jerry cartoon right and Tom and Jerry
are gonna talk this time now that to me
is a demonstration of complete
bankruptcy
you know the whole fact the whole funny
thing about these cartoons was that they
were sound effects right and and mine
although and also other word and
therefore otherworldly so it took you
into a whole other realm than normal it
wouldn’t it be greater they just showed
a cartoon before every movie that’s made
for a family audience anyway because
there’s thousands of them in existence
they don’t even have to go make any more
coming up next

  • Wow, I think S&E got this one wrong. HISTK is a classic. Still cracks me up to this day.

  • I recently watched this movie for the first time in nearly 30 years with my niece, and holy shit, the practical/special effects, sets, and ideas used in the movie are amazing. If it were done today, of course it would be all CGI. It was so refreshing to watch it in a time when this type of filmmaking is dead and nearly forgotten

  • This was the first movie I saw in the cinema, and it was like my Star Wars. Still is. I'm biased. Edit: the cartoon before the film gave me an old-school experience for my first time.

  • There was a reason why this movie spawned a couple of sequels, an animated television series and a live action television series... This wasn't the greatest film ever, nor the worst but was entertaining start to finish. This film is a family adventure film filled with humor and terrific special effects! This a thumbs up!! 3 out of 4 stars!!

  • This is the first time that I’ve heard either Siskel or Ebert mention the older live action movies specifically by Disney. I enjoyed both Honey I Shrunk movies, saw Blew up the Kid last night. Amy O’Neil’s performance is questionable in this film, but she is darlin’.

  • Adding onto what Gene said about how kids are smarter than that, if they were shrunk down, WHY WOULD THEY STAND IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FLOOR WHERE THEY CAN GET STEPPED ON? Even Wayne does that in the third movie.

  • I would have disagreed with them as a kid ... but I really have to agree as an adult. The main problem with the movie is that, because it was made in the 80s when Disney was suffering an identity crisis, the movie doesn't know if it wants to be a B-movie horror movie, which the writers specialized in, or a heartwarming family movie that is Disney's bread-and-butter. As such, both Shrunk The Kids and Blew Up The Kid both feel very disjointed in terms in tone.
