  1. Mel sent the screenplay to George asking for permission to spoof Star Wras. He said OK as long as he wouldn't sell his own Merchandise of Spaceballs. So that's why you start seeing all the Spaceballs merch in the film. Also he told Mel he didn't want Lone Star to resemble Luke Skywalker so he was dressed up like Indiana Jones instead. There's a whole "Making of Spaceballs" documentary here on You Tube!

  2. "Before you die there is something you should know about us, Lone Starr."

    "What?"

    "I am your father's brother's nephew's cousin's former roommate."

    "What's that make us?"

    "Absolutely nothing!"

Fun Fact: During his scene, Michael Winslow did most of the sound effects. In the DVD audio commentary for the movie, Mel Brooks jokes that they saved around $1,000 by letting him do this.

Doll Balls Fact: The scene in which Dark Helmet is playing with his dolls was not in the screenplay. Writer, producer, and director Mel Brooks came up with the idea on the set one day and told this to Rick Moranis, who then improvised the entire scene.

Star Wars Cameo Fact: The Millennium Falcon from the Star Wars saga makes a cameo appearance in this movie. Take a close look at the exterior shot of the Space Diner, and it can be spotted parked there among the other space vehicles. George Lucas got a chance to read the screenplay before production began, and loved it so much that he decided to have his special effects company, Industrial Light & Magic, help make this movie.

  3. Now that you’ve seen Spaceballs, I suggest you watch inner space with Dennis Quaid and meg Ryan.

Another Mel Brooks movie you might enjoy is high Anxiety. It is a parody of various Alfred Hitchcock movies. Even if you’ve never seen an Alfred Hitchcock movie, you would enjoy this movie.

  4. Yeah, I find Mel Brooks movies to be a bit over-hyped as comedies. Blazing Saddles is basically one joke that gets hammered into your skull over and over again in different iterations and I got kind of bored of it after the first half hour. It's a well made movie, I give it that.

Young Frankenstein was also very well made, but I didn't find it that funny, especially after I was told it was greatest comedy in the history of mankind. From my perspective it came off more like an homage to the old 1930s Universal horror classics than a comedy. It's actually like a distant sequel to those films, and Gene Wilder's performance is great.

Spaceballs and Robin Hood: Men in Tights are probably his most joke/gag heavy movies.

  5. John Candy – Planes, Trains and Automobiles with Steve Martin is a Thanksgiving movie.
Also good movies with John Candy: Splash, Summer Rental, Stripes, Career Opportunities.
