Bob and Doug McKenzie in Strange Brew (1983) | Movie Reaction | First Time Watching | Take Off, Eh!
In the video Strange Brew (1983) | Movie Reaction | First Time Watching | Take Off, Eh!, Bob and Doug McKenzie are two of fictional Canadian siblings who are responsible for “Great White North”, a show which was broadcast on SCTV for the show’s most watched season when it moved to the Canadian Broadcasting Channel in the 80’s. Bob is brought to life by comedian Rick Moranis and the character Doug is acted by comic Dave Thomas. The bit was developed originally as filler to both fulfill and mock silly Canadian content laws, the pair grew up to be a pop culture sensation in both Canada and the States. The two later became the focus of a an amazing comedy album, The Great White North, in 1981.

"THAT'S HER!"
That IS a Looney Tunes voice.
Mel funnelcaking Blanc!!!!!
Take off to the Great White North!
SCTV {Second City Television} is often called the "Canadian SNL". It was a launching platform for many great Canadian comedians.
And Martin Short…..
Best of the best review?
Wow you are like the only person on YouTube who has reacted to this
I was, and am, a cinema snob, but this movie had an easy, good-hearted charm that I've always loved. It used to run constantly on cable in the mid-1980s and I watched it a lot back then. My brother-in-law who passed this year would trade lines from this movie with me; we'd always repeat lines like "it's a jelly eh" and "I know about electricity, eh" and we'd always know where they came from and laugh.
I first saw this a movie at a drive-in theater. Double feature with Brian De Palma's Blow Out. True story.
Dad! Bob broke yr beer!
I have been waiting for a Strange Brew reaction from someone forever. You all have had some great reactions, but this has made me subscribe finally. 🙂
Awesome choice, eh! Strange Brew reminds me of many good times visiting Toronto but also the year or so I lived in Golden CO in a house that overlooked the Coors brewery. Quite a unique smell surrounds any brewery town, I actually miss it! This movie is still so funny after all these years!
You Americans are laughably stupid.
Robinson's Trooper is fine
"Well, there's no point in steering now" folds arms
Favorite line hands-down.
The "ehs" have it
"The Canadian version of Wayne's World" makes me cringe every time, lol. Like everyone else said, SCTV was in the same time as SNL beginning years, and predated Wayne's World by like 20 years. Mike Myers literally admits he stole the format from these guys. And, let's be clear… Mike Myers is Canadian, lol…
You guys should watch some SCTV, which is where the whole skit originated.
Gen X Classic.
I remember when they had beer in small bottles like those lol.
In Canadian breweries you can drink as much as you want so long as you dont get drunk !!
Real talk though: the theme song for this movie is an absolute banger. (And it was performed by Dave Thomas's brother, Ian. They're like the Canadian Stallones!)
Watch some SCTV. A lot of talent there. Regarding your comment with Rick being type casted. His characters on it are brilliant.
No way lol I never thought I'd see this pop up.
I watched this so many times in the 80s. HAHA. I forgot most of it, but it’s all coming back. I remember “steam roller”.
I'm looking forward to seeing the full 'The Mutants of 2051 AD'.
"Gee, I gotta take a leak so bad, I can taste it." Literally, he drank his own pee. Remember he already pee'd in the beer.
The accent is Ontario which, for some reason, Americans think is the only Canadian accent. There are several and the Western Canadian accents are very similar to the accents of Americans in the adjoining states. Quebec is French and the Maritime Provinces are a whole other thing entirely.
SCTV is not like Saturday Night Live which is a variety show. SCTV is a parody of network television with the fictional SCTV network broadcasting shows, commercials, and behind the scenes looks at network executives and stars. When NBC took over the show in season 4 they insisted on having musical guests like SNL which spoiled some of the Canadian ambiance of the show, although the American money allowed the creation of longer and more elaborate skits.
As a Southern Californian who grew up in the 80's this was the greatest thing I'd ever seen, as you can see by my pic. This movie defines my teens, you hoser.
As a kid I saw this movie many times. It is my dad's favorite. We even had the Great White North comedy album on LP. I always (jokingly) say this is the best adaptation of Hamlet to be filmed. The connections are there, Elsinore, a father killed and a brother married in–and clearly Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. You were on with the comparisons for the characters. These guys were on a skit on SCTV (Canadian SNL) and were essentially Wayne's World before Wayne's World. Even if this isn't a high performer for you guys I'm so happy you saw the film!
On a comedy album by these two characters, "The Great White North" (1981), it includes the song "Take Off" with guest vocalist Geddy Lee of Rush. He would later appear with these two in 2007 to help celebrate the Two-Four anniversary of Strange Brew.
I remember watching this in the theaters when in came out. It was a big part of my childhood.
One Halloween when I was a teen, I got up on my roof with a stereo, and played their comedy cassette saying "Take Off, you Hosehead!" and such when trick-or-treaters would come up to the house. Not a nice thing to do, but I had fun.
If you have ever seen the movie Brother Bear both Dave Thomas and Rick Moranis played the pair of Moose as Bob and Doug….
This is one of the goofiest, silliest and funny movies ever made. I'm still trying to figure out how they got Max Von Seydow to appear, but he was great! Geddy Lee, bassist from Rush appeared in their "12 Days of Christmas song." I'm putting on my took, and sitting down to watch! Another great, goofy movie is Weird Al Yankovick's "UHF!"
Fun Fact: Actor Rick Moranis was assaulted on the streets of NYC in October 2020.
When I was a kid…it was a family tradition to listen to the bob and doug christmas album…..their twelve days of christmas is a must listen!
