  1. Strange Brew was based on an old blues standard, "Lawdy Mama". In fact there is a version of one of the Live Cream albums (#1 I think) released in the US that had Lawdy Mama as one of the tracks. The UK version did not have that.

  2. The syncopation is so great on this! Bruce's bass rhythm seems to be following Baker's bass pedal. Not in the middle, where Bruce keeps up the same idea but Baker does something else more straight time, and they don't come together again. These seems like an unleashing of control to find something something else but with respect for what had launched it.

Clapton was hanging out with Harrison during this period (that influence maybe most noticeable in "Badge," but I'm sure the melody is Bruce's, not Clapton's.

  3. Cream were a British rock band formed in London in 1966. The group consisted of bassist Jack … Ringo Starr (The Beatles), Roger Waters (Pink Floyd), Brian May (Queen), Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin), Eric Clapton. Not all at the same time !

  4. That last chord; 5th string A, open, 4th string D, 7th fret (A), 3rd string G, 6th fret (C#), 2nd string B, open, 1st string E, open. The last note of the riff is a C natural, 3rd string G, 5th fret.

  5. I rarely if ever make negative comments on any music and this is not meant to be negative. This is a great song but I don't like the way it is mixed. I wonder if this song has been remastered? I'm not an audio engineer but it seems to me that this song could be improved immensely with some minor tweaks. Maybe this is exactly what Clapton and company were aiming for.

  6. the classic "Badge" is a must hear, written by Clapton, Harrison (and a line by Ringo), with George on rhythm guitar … ear candy and a nice Clapton solo … George helped as it was for the last album (Goodbye) and Eric needed a song … and Eric read "bridge" as "badge", hence the title

  7. Another random plea for consideration of Jack Bruce's solo goods, especially Songs for a Tailor LP – his own version of Theme from an Imaginary Western (cover by Mountain[West] v. well known), Rope Ladder to the Moon, and a couple o' raucous tunes to open and close: Never Tell Your Mother She's Out of Tune, and The Clearout

  8. The height of psychedelic music! And of course in response to your comment about the Beatles vibes there is that big friendship between George Harrison and Eric Clapton.
