more info

In 1980 Dave Thomas & Rick Moranis introduced the Bob & Doug McKenzie characters to SCTV, and Hosermania was born. Not just a fad, but an encapsulation of many of our Canadian traits (for good or for bad), that would last right until present day.

In 1981 the duo released a comedy album called “The Great White North” which also included one music track “our hit single” “Take Off” which featured guest vocalist Geddy Lee of Rush. This of course was Rush’ big break out moment (just kidding).

I can’t describe to you, unless you grew up in Canada during the 80’s what a fun, cultural influence this album was for us hosers. Yes, I owned a copy, on vinyl, so I could listen to the whole thing or just the song.

Not only did it win the Juno award for top Canadian comedy album in 1982, it was nominated but did not win the Grammy in 1983 for the same category. Take Off actually hit #16 on the Billboard charts in the U.S. (higher than any Rush song ever did!). The album was #1 in Canada for 7 straight weeks straddling 1981 and 1982.

This video tribute for Canada Day, is mostly 80’s clips, with some late 70’s clips which are for all us Gen-X’ers. These are very Canadian clips, they are the moments and memories of coming of age in the great white north. Whether we liked or enjoyed all the selections, or how these heroes have aged, is irrelevant. Back then in the 4 channel universe we were all exposed to the same experiences; no hiding behind youtube algorithms that only fed us what we wanted to see and hear. I say 4 channels of course because we typically had a 4th French CBC channel which got real interesting after midnight! (no clips).
