In the video The Dave Thomas Comedy Show, Bob and Doug McKenzie are a pair of made up Canadian siblings who hosted “Great White North”, a sketch which was aired on second city television for the show’s most popular season when it braodcast by CBC Television in in the early 80s. Bob is brought to life by actor Rick Moranis and Doug’s character is played by comic Dave Thomas. The bit was developed originally as a sketch to both please and makes jokes about non sensical Canadian content legislation, the two morphed into a pop culture hit in both Canada and the States. The brothers enetually would become the focus of a an amazing comedy album, The Great White North, in 1981.
The Dave Thomas Comedy Show was a sketch-based, five-week summer replacement series in 1990 starring Canadian Dave Thomas. Also featured were Anson Downes, Teresa Ganzel, Don Lake, Fran Ryan, Julie Fulton and David Wiley. The Show’s writers were Dave Thomas, Mike Meyers, Mike Short, Michael Bayouth and Anson Downes. Dave had a lot of his friends and Second City pals on the show, with each show featuring a big name guest star. These were John Candy, Dan Ackroyd, Chevy Chase, Martin Short and Catherine O’Hara. Also included were Valerie Bromfield and Rick Overton. Bayouth conceived and story-boarded this opening-title-sequence with Dave and Anson and had a blast drawing everything from the sets to caricatures of the show’s stars. (That’s me as a Knight in the open saying “He’s done it!”)
