‘What’s New?’ (Haggard and Burke) – Michelle Benjamin with Doug McKenzie. One of several songs recorded at an afternoon session recently.

This, as were all the others, new songs to both of us – first take – no rehearsal. The bass and drums backing were created in PG Music’s wonderful add-on to Band in a Box – ‘Real tracks’. The piano was improvised from a chord/melody lead-sheet – the leadsheet (different key) is in Sher Music’s ‘New Real Book’ Volume 1, but this has been transposed into the female vocal range, from C to F!
The video and the bass and drums backing track can be downloaded free of charge from my website –

The transcription of the accompaniment can be purchased separately ($1.20), and is on my current DVD, along with the midi file that was recorded as the video was recorded, Go to my website for details –

  1. You're welcome. For what is worth, everybody I played this tune with and every recorded version I've heard uses Major. In other words bridge is exactly the same as A part only a fourth above. But I confess to never have seen the original music by Bob Haggart.
But I have met his son, he's a piano player!
    Season's greetings!

  2. Thanks for the info on Irving Berlin. The leadsheet I used (Sher Music's 'Real Book' Vol.1) offers both minor and major as chord options after the bridge!

  3. It was Fsharp (or Gflat) Berlin played in, but he had a device in piano that would change the pitch according to his needs while he kept playing on those black keys. And speaking of keys, doesn't the bridge of "What's New" resolve in Major rather than minor chord you're playing? Just curious…

  4. Doug and Michelle, one of my all time favourites, by one of my all time favourite keyboard/singer combinations.
Back in the fifties (yes I am that old) one of my first records was Maynard Ferguson with his big band playing "What's New" and her I am hearing again.
Great rendition as usual from you both. Thank you.
    Regards, Reg.

  5. Doug and Michelle,

Beautiful recording. I was impressed by the good electric piano sound. I found a similar sound on my Yamaha CP 300, Maybe I shall give that a try on some future song recording.
    Thank to both of you!

    Keep swingin´
    Bruno

  6. Thanks Robert – I used this scale on the Ebm7 (ii chord in the key of Db Major)because it is one of those that sits easy under the fingers in this situation. (C(1),C#(3),D(1),Eb(3)F(1),Gb(2),Ab(3),Bb(4),c(1) ..etc.).
Was it Irving Berlin who composed and played everything on piano in Db because it was such a 'natural' key for human hands?

  7. I enjoy this. It gets better with repeated viewings. Just noticed your annotation about using Eb Dorian bebop scale. (Eb, F, Gb, Ab, Bb, C, Db, D, Eb). That was new to me. It's a mixolydian bebop scale with a flat 3 instead of the major 3 that mixolydian bebop scale uses. But when the Mixolydian bebop scale is used for "drop 2" chords it employs a 2nd diminished chord when the top note is the 6th. That doesn't sound right however when the 3rd is flatted as it is in Dorian. Anyway, tx!
