Lots of the most successful Hollywood actors & directors are Canadian. To celebrate them (and ourselves – Canada turned 153 July 1st), we’re putting Sean through his paces with what might be the toughest would you rather test yet.
The rules of would you rather: you get 2 choices and you always have to pick one. Please play along in the comments and let us know what your picks would be!
Cobie Smulders or Emily VanCamp
Maria Hill or Sharon Carter (the MCU characters the above women play)
Green Hornet or Green Lantern (each played by a Canadian – Seth Rogen & Ryan Reynolds)
Wolverine or Deadpool (the characters are both Canadian & Deadpool is of course played by Canadian Ryan Reynolds)
note: Logan/Wolverine is from Cold Lake Alberta; Wade Wilson/Deadpool is from “the city that rhymes with vagina” Regina, Saskatchewan
Ryan Reynolds or Ryan Gosling
Ellen Page or Rachel McAdams
Michael Cera or Seth Rogen
note: Juno, starring Ellen Page & Michael Cera was directed by Canadian Jason Reitman & filmed in British Columbia
Jim Carrey or Mike Myers
Rick Moranis or Martin Short
Dan Aykroyd or John Candy
Hayden Christenson or Jay Baruchel
note: Jay Baruchel voices Hiccup in How To Train Your Dragon trilogy, directed by Canadian Dean DeBlois
Catherine O’Hara or Pamela Anderson
Donald Sutherland or Christopher Plummer
William Shatner or Victor Garber
Sandra Oh or Neve Campbell
Eugene Levy or Michael J. Fox

Joshua Jackson or Matthew Perry
Brendan Fraser or Nathan Filion
note: Brendan Fraser starred in Oscar best picture winner Crash, written & directed by Canadian Paul Haggis
also note: Brendan Fraser starred as inept Canadian mountie Dudley Do-Right in a terrible movie based on an old tv series. Mounties, or the RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police), are the national police force in Canada, known for their red serge tunics & distinctive campaign hats. Though no longer necessarily ‘mounted,’ they can still be spotted on horseback in ceremonies
Jacob Tremblay or Finn Wolfhard
note: aside from Stranger Things, Finn Wolfhard will appear in Ghostbusters: Afterlife, directed by Jason Reitman; the original 1984 Ghostbusters was directed by Jason’s dad, Canadian Ivan Reitman, starring Dan Aykroyd & Rick Moranis
Denis Villeneuve or Denys Arcand
Ivan Reitman or James Cameron
note: James Cameron directed Victor Garber in Titanic & tapped Celine Dion for its theme song
Keanu Reeves or Dwayne Johnson
note: Keanu Reeves was born in Beirut, Lebanon, but grew up in Canada. Although his mother was English & his father American, Reeves identifies as Canadian & holds only Canadian citizenship
Dwayne Johnson was born in California but has Canadian citizenship through his father, pro wrestler Rocky Johnson, who was from Nova Scotia (Dwayne Johnson is half black, from his dad & half New Zealand Samoan from his mom). The Rock played football in the CFL (Canadian Football League) with the Calgary Stampeders
Keanu Reeves voices Duke Caboom the Canadian stuntman in Toy Story 4

Other Canadian directors of note: Norman Jewison, David Cronenberg, Sarah Polley, Xavier Dolan, Jean-Marc Vallee, Atom Egoyan, Deepa Mehta, Patricia Rozema
Ellen Page co-directed There’s Something In the Water, an examination of environmental racism exploring the disproportionate effect of environmental damage on Black Canadian & First Nations communities in Nova Scotia
Jay Baruchel wrote, directed & starred in the 2017 sports comedy film Goon: Last of the Enforcers, and also directed & starred in horror film Random Acts of Violence, available on VOD July 31, 2020 in Canada and in the United States on August 20, 2020. Baruchel was also involved in writing the comic book series Captain Canuck
Bob and Doug McKenzie are fictional Canadian brothers who hosted Great White North, a sketch on SCTV. Bob is played by Rick Moranis & Doug is played by Dave Thomas. Although created originally as filler to both satisfy and mock network Canadian content demands, the duo became a pop culture phenomenon in both Canada & USA. A hoser or hose-head denotes a Canadian. It is both a slang term and a derogatory term, akin to the derogatory term Canuck. Hoser originates from Canada but is used primarily by those imitating Canadians
Martin short was born in Hamilton, Ontario & graduated from McMaster University in 1971 with a degree in social work but became interested in acting once he was cast in a Toronto production of Godspell that same year. Among other members of that cast: Victor Garber, Eugene Levy, Dave Thomas, Andrea Martin; Paul Shaffer was musical director.
O’ Canada! was a Circle-Vision 360° film attraction at the Canada Pavilion, Epcot’s World Showcase. Its name derives from Canada’s national anthem. It showcased images of Canada’s cities & sights, narrated by Martin Short. It closed August 2019 to be replaced by a new film titled Canada: Far and Wide

  1. Wolverine is the coolest hands down no doubt from a serious standpoint, but Deadpool is so incredibly amazing and the fact that he was even thought up is fantastic…..Ryan did an awesome job and we cannot wait for the 3rd!
