Back when he was still a bonafide star, SCTV—the Canadian SNL—parodied McDonald’s knack for knockout backup vocals. In a sketch, Rick Moranis’s proto-VJ character Gerry Todd cuts to what is announced as a video clip for Christopher Cross’s 1980 No. 2 single “Ride Like the Wind.” What we get is very different: a brief vignette of McDonald speeding his way to the studio as Cross’s verse plays, then running into the recording booth just in time to record his vocal, which famously hits on the chorus. The bit is repeated a few times. Then he bounces back into his car, presumably to speed off to the Mexican border.
